HERKIMER-Douglas R. Murphy age 88 of 104 North Washington Street (Claxton Manor) formerly of Main Street Mohawk passed away on Monday morning March 13, 2006 in Saint Elizabeths Medical Center, Utica.
He was born on January 24, 1918 in Mount Kisco, son of the late Albert and Hazel Freely Murphy. Doug was raised in Mohawk and was a graduate of Mohawk High School. He furthered his education graduating from New York State College for Teachers at Albany and at Syracuse University, Maxwell Graduate School for Citizenship and Public Affairs. On March 13 1941 he enlisted in the US Army serving with Troop A of the 104th Cavalry Recognizance Squad in Central Europe. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945 with the rank of Tech-5.
For a few years after his military service he went to work for the Remington Rand Company in Ilion. For more than twenty-six years he worked for the United States Postal service in Utica, first with the Mail and Rail Service and later as a postal clerk retiring in 1975.
He was a member of the Mohawk United Methodist Church, the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post # 25, Mohawk, Disabled American Veterans Stars and Stripes # 82, Utica and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
To all that knew Doug they will remember a quiet, gentle man with a dry sense of humor and an unforgettable smile. He will be missed by his many friends in Mohawk and the Claxton Manor.
Surviving are four cousins, Linda Comstock of East Herkimer, Timothy McGuire of Ilion, Sally Riesenberger of Oriskany, Wendy Bowers of Utica and several cousins in CT. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Robert Murphy and three cousins, Doris McGuire, Harold and Dorothy Layman.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday at 11:00 am in the Wakeman Chapel of Folts Homes, Herkimer. The Reverend Debra Wollaber, Co-Pastor of Morning Star Ministries and the Reverend Arthur Miner, Chaplain of the Folts Homes will officiate.
Interment with military honors will take place later this spring in Deansboro Cemetery, Deansboro.
