RICHFIELD SPRINGS-Douglas E. Sikkema 45 of 27 Lake Streetlost a courageous battle with Kidney Disease on Tuesday evening, November 21,2000 in Saint Lukes Memorial Hospital Center, New Hartford. Words cannotexpress how the support of Dougs family and close friends lifted his spiritsduring his valiant struggle. He was born on October 19, 1955 in Dumont, NJ, sonof Janet Marie McCarty Sikkema and the late Frederick J. Sikkema. Doug wasraised and educated in Springfield. An honorably discharged US Army veteran hehad served with the 60th Infantry Division in Germany. On May 22,1993 he married the former Kelly Morgan in Hyde Hall, Springfield. For the pastseven years he has been a self-employed real estate owner and landlord. He wasbaptized in the Methodist faith. He was a member of the Utica Chapter of theHarley Owners Group. Doug will always be remembered for his love of motorcycleriding and will forever have the breeze in his face.
Surviving are his loving wife Kelly, his mother; Janet MarieSikkema of East Springfield, three brothers; Gary Sikkema of Springfield, Johnand his wife Ann Sikkema, Richard and his wife Ann Sikkema all of Phoenix, AZ, asister; Deborah and her husband Robert Bookhout of Oneonta, one sister-in-law;Barbara and her husband Thomas Birmingham of West Winfield, two brother-in-laws;Donald Morgan of Newport, Edward and his wife Barbara Morgan of Clay, severalcherished nieces, nephews, great nieces,great nephews and he beloved pets Nachoand Sedona. Besides his father Frederick J. Sikkema he was preceded in death bya brother Frederick Sikkema Jr. and his mother-in-law; Dorothy Morgan.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM inthe Springfield Presbyterian Church, with the Reverend Dwayne Durandofficiating. The family will receive relatives and friends at the home of Dougand Kelly at 27 Lake Street on Friday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM or on Saturday from10:00 to 11:00 AM (one hour prior to the memorial service) at the SpringfieldPresbyterian Church. Memorial donations may be made to the Organ Donor AwarenessProgram, c/o Faxton-Saint Lukes Volunteer Association, PO Box 479, Utica, NY13503, the Springfield First Responders or the Richfield Springs EmergencyRescue Squad.
