Obituary

Herkimer-Dwight Brewer age 81 of 104 North Washington Street, formerly of Ferncliff Road, Mohawk, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, February 20, 2008 in the Masonic Care Community, Utica. Dwight was born on April 10, 1926 in Columbia Center, son of the late Dwight Sr. and Grace Shaw Brewer. A lifelong area resident he was raised in Columbia Centerand was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School. A US Navy veteran of World War II he enlisted on September 17, 1943. He was the recipient of the American Theatre Medal, European Theatre Medal and the Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on April 4, 1946 attaining the rank of Fireman First Class. On May 12, 1946 he was united in marriage with the former Betty Jane Skinner. They shared a loving and devoted union of fifty-three years until her passing on January 23, 2000. For twenty years Mr. Brewer worked as an assembler for the Remington Arms Company, Ilion. He later went to work as assistant foreman For the Tennessee Gas Company retiring1985 after nineteen years of service. Mr. Brewer was a forty-four year member of Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post # 35 in Mohawk. In his leisure time he enjoyed repairing things and was affectionately called Mr. Fix-it. He was also very skilled in plumbing and carpentry work. He was a man who appreciated all of his material things and took excellent care of them. Dwight was a friend to many and will never be forgotten. Surviving are his son, James Alan Brewer sr. and his wife Ellen of West Winfield, two daughters, Cheryl Wolber and her husband Richard of Utica and FL, Gail Schultz of Ilion, two sisters, Helen Androski of Zephyr Hills, FL, June Sprague of Cooperstown, eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents and wife Betty Jane he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jo Agatha Sdrewski in August of 2007, a brother, Lyndon Brewer, two sisters, Florence Acker, Doris Chapman and a son-in-law, David L. Schultz. A memorial service for Dwight and Betty Jane will be held on Saturday at 12:00 noon in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home; 40 West James Street, RichfieldSprings. The Reverend Wrightson Tongue will officiate. The family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the memorial service (11:00 to 12:00 noon). Interment with military honors will follow in Lakeview Cemetery.
