Obituary

RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Edward Paul Smith age 84 of Monticello Street passed away on Wednesday evening July 12, 2006 in Valley Health Services Inc., Herkimer. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side. He was born on January 17, 1922 in West Exeter, son of the late Albert and Rena Wright Smith. A lifelong area resident he was educated in Schuyler Lake School and went on to graduate from Richfield Springs High School. A veteran of World War II he served with the US Army in campaigns in Rhineland and Central Europe. He was the recipient of the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the American Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in October of 1946 attaining the rank of Corporal. On June 12, 1948 he was united in marriage with Genevieve Kasprowicz in Saint Josephs Church Rectory in Richfield Springs. For thirty-four years, Mr. Smith was a Mill Worker and worked for the General Mill Work Company in Utica, retiring in 1984. Edward will always be remembered as a family man. His home was the center of his being. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his many friends and family especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed. Surviving are his loving wife of fifty-eight years Genevieve, one son, Richard P. and his wife Ann Smith of Richfield Springs, a daughter Diana Couchman and her husband Kit of Hopkinsville, KY, one brother Earl Smith of Delmar, two sisters, Norma Wiltsie of St Johnsville, Helen Reed of Grafton, W VA, eight grandchildren, six great grandchildren several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother George Smith. Funeral service will be Saturday at 1:00 pm in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home; 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs. The Reverend John Young will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in Saint Josephs Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Friday from 7:00 until 9:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
