Obituary

SCHUYLER LAKE - Edwin Thomas Donnelly age 59, of State Route 28, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, June 26th, 2003 in his home. He was born on March 10, 1944 in Cooperstown son of the late William R. and Mary Kraham Donnelly. A life long area resident he was raised in Schuyler Lake and was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School where he was an All Star Quarterback. Upon the completion of high school he went on to Parsons College in Iowa where he majored in Physical Education. He received his Masters Degree from Cortland State Teachers College. For over 25 years Mr. Donnelly was a Physical Education Teacher. He first taught in Phoenix, NY and then for three years in Richfield Springs Central School System. The majority of his teaching and coaching career was in the Frankfort-Schuyler School District retiring in 1990. For Ed Donnelly sports was not a way of life, but a fashion of living in Sportsmanship and teaching. They were first and foremost to him. Ed was a former Amateur Boxer who retired in 1968 at the age of 24 with a record of 47 wins and 6 losses. He had won the Golden Gloves in Iowa in both 1964 and 1965 was a runner up in 1964 for the Olympic Boxing Team. In 1966 he was a runner up in Troy and a semifinalist in North Carolina. He had also won bouts in Oneonta and Saratoga. During his amateur career he fought such notables as Hedgeman Lewis, Marvin Hagler, Billy Backus as well as being a sparring partner for Vito Antuofermo. Ed had a strong belief in God and led a devoted Catholic Life. He was a member of Saint Josephs Church, Richfield Springs. A community minded individual he was also a member of the Frankfort Kiwanis Club and a Volunteer Firefighter with the Frankfort Fire Department. He will be truly missed by many. Surviving are two sons, Paul Donnelly of Clifton Park, Marc Donnelly of Schuyler, a daughter Elaine Donnelly of Boulder CO., two brothers William Donnelly, James and his wife Sharon Donnelly all of Schuyler Lake, four nephews Bobby Donnelly, James Donnelly, William Donnelly and Thomas Donnelly, two nieces Sharon Clancy and Laura Sheldon several great nieces, great nephews and cousins. Besides his parents a sister Ann Marie Wilson preceded him in death. Funeral from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs, on Tuesday at 10:30 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow in St. Josephs Church, Richfield Springs, at 11:00 am with the Reverend John Roos officiating. Interment will take place in St. Josephs Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Monday from 6:00 until 9:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Josephs Church, Richfield Springs. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
