HERKIMER- Eileen Chapman, age 98, passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, July 23, 2013 in Valley Health Service, Inc.
She was born on June 18, 1915 in Leeds, England, daughter of the late Leonard and Agnes Pickersqill Chapman. In 1920 her family emigrated from Portsmouth, England to America and settled in the Richfield Springs area. Eileen attended a one room school house in Cullen and went on to graduate from Richfield Springs High School. From 1936 until 1943 she was the office secretary for the Richfield Springs Central School. She then went on to work for the County of Herkimer in the County Clerks office. She worked as deputy clerk from 1953 until 1978, retiring after thirty-five years of dedicated service.
Eileen had a strong belief in God and was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls. She also held memberships in the Evening Valley Star Chapter #82 Order of the Eastern Star, the Red Hat Dolls of the Mohawk Valley and Chapter # 38215 of the Red Hat Society. Through the years, Eileen had many diverse interests; she enjoyed traveling, sewing, crocheting and various crafts, especially making Raggedy Ann Dolls. She enjoyed spending time in her flower garden which was admired by many as well as time spent golfing, playing bridge at least twice a week and reading when she had some spare time.
To all who knew her she will always be remembered as a loving, caring and gracious lady with an unforgettable smile. She will be sadly missed by her many friends and family.
Surviving are two nieces, Karen Pierson and her husband Robert of Baton Rouge, LA, Gloria Kuhner and her husband John of Wolcott, CT, a first cousin Bob Fagan of Mohawk, great nieces and nephews John Leonard Kuhner of Ct, Leslie Ferguson and her husband Scott of CA, Gregory Pierson and his partner Rosetta Lee, of WA, Jennifer Contreras and her husband Braulio of TX, two great-great nieces and one great-great nephew. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her brother Sidney and sister-in-law Ruth Chapman.
A Funeral service will be held on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. The Reverend Janet Gleason, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Herkimer/Little Falls will officiate. Interment will follow in Highland Rural Cemetery, Jordanville. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relative and friends on Saturday from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. (one hour prior to the service.
