HERKIMER-Eleanor Matilda Thompson age 99 passed away peacefully on Saturday morning November 3, 2018 in Home Life at Folts after a brief illness. She had the comfort and support of her loving family by her side. She was born on March 3, 1919 in Glenfield, daughter of the late William and Bertha Graves Scanlon. Eleanor was raised and educated in Greig and Herkimer Central School. On July 26, 1935 she was united in marriage to Charles Leo Thompson in Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer. They shared a loving and devoted union of fifty-four years until his passing on February 21, 1990. Mrs. Thompson was employed as a machine operator for Burtell Dress Manufacturing for twenty years, retiring in July of 1981. Eleanor had a strong sense of community; she was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary Post # 4915, a volunteer with RSVP and a member of the Ladies Garment Workers Union # 1. To all who knew her she will always be remembered as a strong, independent and caring mother. She was the family matriarch, in either good times or bad she was always there for them. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family especially her cherished grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She will be sadly missed.
Surviving are three sons, Charles Thompson Jr. of East Greenbush, Bill Thompson and his wife Bertha of Schuyler, Ronald Thompson and his wife Karen of Herkimer, a daughter, Cindy Berberick and her husband Frank of Herkimer, a daughter-in-law, Joan Thompson of Ilion, one son-in-law, Alan Pettengill of Herkimer, a sister, Nona Stewart of MD, twenty three grandchildren, thirty two great grandchildren and fourteen great-great grandchildren several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband Charles she was preceded in death by two sons James Dwight Thompson and Bruce Thompson, two daughters, Marilyn Perrone and Sharon Pettengill, a daughter-in-law, Lylet Thompson, two son-in-laws, Augie Perrone and Joseph Netti, a grandson Cory Thompson, three brothers, William, Donald and Reginald Scanlonand four sisters, Ruth Cumm, Beverly Stagliano, Alta Cool and Anna Scanlon.
Calling hours for Mrs. Thompson will be on Wednesday from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. A funeral service will follow immediately after in the funeral home at 1:00 pm with Pastor Joelle Faulks, pastor of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls officiating. Interment will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to American Cancer Society, Hospice and Palliative Care, NH or Alzheimer Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
