RICHFIELD SPRINGS-Elfriede J. Contreni age 91 passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon April 18, 2015 in A.O. Fox Hospital, Oneonta. She had the comfort of her loving family at her side. She was born on June 18, 1923 in Sorno, Germany, daughter of the late Wilhelm and Frieda Richter Hille. Elfriede came to this country in 1929 with her family. She was raised in Cliffside Park, NJ and graduated from Cliffside Park High School. She attended Englewood Hospital School of Nursing. On January 6, 1942 she was united in marriage to Army Sgt. John J. Contreni in Brooklyn. They shared a loving and devoted union of thirty-seven years until his passing on May 19, 1979. Besides keeping a home and raising her seven children, she worked as a secretary-bookkeeper and co-owner of Contreni Construction Company in Englewood and Montvale, NJ for thirty years before retiring in 1977 and moving with her husband moved to Andes, NY. During her retirement she assisted her son, Laurence, at the Arkville Country Store in Arkville, NY. Mrs. Contreni came to the Richfield Springs area in 2004 where she made her home with her children, Laurence Contreni and Michele Contreni. To those who knew her, Mrs. Contreni was happiest when she was surrounded by her friends and family especially her cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. An exceptionally well-read woman, she was never shy about sharing her opinions. She will be greatly missed. Surviving her are four sons, Dr. John Contreni Jr. and his wife Margarita of Lafayette, IN, Richard S. Contreni of Manchester, NJ, Laurence C. Contreni of Richfield Springs, Stephen M. Contreni and his wife Eileen of Red Hook, two daughters, Lorraine Sweetman and her husband John of Ilion, Michele E. Contreni of Richfield Springs, sixteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband John she was preceded in death by a daughter, Claire Call and a brother, Horst Hille. Interment will be private. Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.
