HERKIMER-Elizabeth Maytan Betty age 89, formerly of 604 Ronald Street passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning May 23, 2007 in Mercy Hospital, Buffalo. She had the comfort of her loving family at her side.
Betty was born on July 17, 1917 in Herkimer, daughter of the late Daniel and Katherine Kolarik Marechek. A lifelong resident of Herkimer she graduated from Herkimer High School and furthered her education graduating from the Utica School of Commerce. On June 10, 1939 she was united in marriage with Samuel John Maytan in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Little Falls. A blessed union of forty-three years, until his passing on September 2, 1982.
Mrs. Maytan was employed by the Herkimer County Cooperative Extension for thirty years retiring in 1979.
She had a strong belief in God and was an active member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Herkimer where she had taught Sunday school. She was a member and Past Matron of Myrtle Chapter Order of the Eastern Star. Betty will always be remembered for her strong sense of community. Her other activities included being a leader of Brownie and Girl Scout troops, running for the Board of Education and organizing the Tuger School Home Bureau. For eleven years she was a volunteer Income Tax counselor for the local AARP, as well as a Literary Volunteer, a Nurses Aid and founding member of Washburn Memorial. She will be greatly missed by many especially her family.
Surviving are her two daughters, Eleanor Walthart of Nashville, TN, Arlene Maytan of Rochester, six grandchildren, Lisa and her husband David Mangino, Kelly Yavornitzki, Krista and her husband Daniel Ford, Valerie Walthart, Brian Walthart, and Jason Walthart, four great grandchildren, a sister Anna Demtsias, one brother-in-law, Martin and his wife Jean Mayton, a sister-in-law, Dorothy Mizerak, five nieces, Betty Ann and her husband Buster Eyman, Debbie and her husband Paul Simeone, Linda and her husband John Shutts, Kathy and her husband Daniel Collins and Paula Hurst, two nephews and their wives, Mark and Linda Mayton, Gary and Angela Mizerak.
Besides her parents and husband Samuel she was preceded in death by two brothers Daniel and his wife Helen Marechek, Paul Marechek and one nephew Daniel Marechek who is survived by his wife Carol.
Funeral service will be on Wednesday at 11:00 am in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Herkimer. The Reverend Ann Zimmerman, Pastor will officiate. The family will be present in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 5:00 until 8:00 pm. Interment will be private and at the convenience of her family.
Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Members of Evening Star Valley Chapter # 82 OES are asked to meet at the funeral home for ritualistic services on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
