Obituary

Mrs. Elizabeth Ann (Evans) Seamon, formerly of Little Lakes Road in Warren, and most recently of Camel Hill Road, Schenevus, (town of Westford) passed away on March 13, 2016 at home in Westford. She was 92. Elizabeths independent and hard working nature was well known as well as her devotion to the care of her husband, Willis Grant Seamon, who left us far too soon on March 9, 1986, and her love for her children and grandchildren. She was very proud of her family. Known to many as Betty, she was born December 19, 1923, at home on Wall Street, West Winfield, to William and Annie (Parry) Evans, Elizabeth was the oldest of nine children. Her parents William and Annie emigrated from the Isle of Anglesey, Wales three days after their marriage in March 1923 on the RMS Celtic , one of the large passenger ships of the day, disembarking at Ellis Island and then boarding a train to upstate NY. While six months pregnant with Elizabeth, Annie underwent an operation under ether to remove her appendix, and three months later Elizabeth was born, no worse for the wear! Elizabeth spoke only Welsh for the first five years of her life, learning English when she went to kindergarten. Her parents first lived in West Winfield. They moved to a Watkins tenant farm at the corner of Cty Rte. 51 and Saunders Gulf Road, West Exeter and later to another Watkins tenant farm at Woods Corners on Cty Rte. 51. Her father, William passed away September 20, 1955 at the young age of 55. Her mother, Annie Evans, a delightful lady, was well known in the area, especially for her pie-making abilities. Annie passed away April 10, 1993 at the age of 91 after living in Bridgewater for many years, and both William and Annie are buried in the Unadilla Forks Cemetery. Elizabeth went to high school in West Winfield, leaving school when she and Willis met at a square dance. Both were avid roller skaters in their younger years. In her teens and early 20s Elizabeth worked as a domestic in the West Windfield-Bridgewater area, as well as in Latham for the Emerick family, while Willis worked for Emericks Tractors as a mechanic. Elizabeth and Willis were married January 12, 1945, in the Methodist Church in West Exeter. They lived in Warren for their entire married life, purchasing the house on Little Lakes Road in 1944 and moving there in 1945. Elizabeth lived there for 67 years, and relied on the kindness of wonderful neighbors, Jim Collins, Bob Gardner, and Hilton Acres to help her out. She sold the property in 2012 and moved with her daughter and family to the town of Westford. Elizabeth and Willis enjoyed stock car races, Willis as the engine specialist on the Frank Trinkhaus racing team an Elizabeth as an enthusiastic spectator. After Willis long illness in the 1960s, which ended his employment at Beadles in Richfield Springs, Elizabeth helped him with his home-based mechanic business. She also enjoyed working in the yard, having coffee downtown in Richfield with her friends, and buying lottery tickets at Ralphs, following auto racing news, and reading all the area daily news and weekly newspapers. After her move to Westford, she spent a good deal of her time doing jigsaw puzzles. After her first child, David, was born, she was employed as a machine operator for the Roberts Dress Shop on Park Street, Richfield Springs in 1954 and 1956 taking time out in 1955 to give birth to her second child, Nancy, Barmon Brothers Dress Shop (now a storage building behind the Tally-Ho but formerly the dining hall of Bloomfields Hotel from 1959 to 1968: for a short time at the Shurkatch Fishing Tackle Manufacturing Co.; and finally retiring at age 67 in 1991 from Duoflod in Mohawk. Survivors include a son, David Richard Seamon, PhD., Kansas State University of Manhattan, Kansas, a daughter, Nancy Elaine (Seamon) Clickman and her husband Charles W. (Guy) Clickman, Jr.; a granddaughter, Elaina Lacey Clickman, Syracuse and grandson Zachariah David Clickman, one brother John (Jane Pritchard) Evans of West Winfield; two sisters, Jane Land (Morris Sonny , deceased) of West Winfield and Kathleen Land (William); Bridgewater, three sisters in law; Eleanor Evans(Shaul) Evans; Dorothy (Merkley) Evans; and Helen (Wakefield) Evans all of West Winfield, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
