Ellen Joyce Huyck, age 72, of Herkimer passed away peacefully on Saturday morning February 20, 2016 after a short illness. She had the support and comfort of her family at her side. She was born on September 2, 1943 in Ilion, daughter of the late Walter and Mary Ellen Knox Klayer. A lifelong area resident she graduated from Mohawk High School with the class of 1961 and Utica College in 1965. She furthered her educated receiving a Masters Degree in Social Work from Syracuse University in 1987. On September 2, 1967 she was united in marriage to James H. Huyck, III in the Fort Herkimer Church, Mohawk. They shared a devoted union of 32 years until his passing in 1999. For over 20 years she worked as a social worker with Family Services of Mohawk Valley and Oneida County Child Advocacy Center. She retired this past December. Mrs. Huyck was a member of Herkimer Reformed Church and the Herkimer Historic Preservation Committee. In her leisure time, Joyce enjoyed traveling, gardening, fishing and reading. To all who knew her she was a loving, caring and helpful lady. She found great satisfaction in doing for others while looking for nothing in return. She will be sadly missed by her many friends and family, especially her cherished grandchildren. Surviving are her daughter, Hilary Huyck along with her companion Jesse Bergevin, granddaughter, Abigail, grandson, Julian Bergevin-Huyck all of Herkimer. A sister Margaret Trefzger of Ilion, sisters-in-law Pamela Klayer of Strongsville, Ohio, Connie Huyck, Ann Adams and her husband Tom all of Herkimer, several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband James she was preceded in death by her brother Walter Klayer, Jr. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 am in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. Calling hours will be on Friday in the funeral home from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Memorial donations may be made to the SU School of Social Work or the Fort Herkimer Church Restoration. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
