Ellen Miller Larsen Herkimer-Ellen Miller Larsen 97 died on Sunday, August 6, 2000. Ellen was born July 6, 1903, daughter of Carl and Anna Miller, in Denmark. She came to the United States in 1921. She married Bruno W. Larsen, August 17, 1927, he passed away in 1974. She was also predeceased by one sister Nita Nealsen Weeks. Ellen became a resident of Otsego County in 1946. For many years she resided in Cooperstown, New York and was employed as Resident Manager of Cooperlane Apartment in Cooperstown until the age of 85.
Ellen led a busy and productive life. She was one of the first presidents of the original Senior Citizens Club of Otsego County. She helped organize the Glimmerglass Circle in Cooperstown. She assisted in the formation of the Otsego county council of Senior Citizens in which she also held offices.
Ellen was one of the charter members of the Otsego County Office of the Aging Advisory Council on which she served for more than ten years. In addition she helped initiate a chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons in which she also held office. In 1980 she led the effort to organize a pre-White House Conference on Aging event in Otsego County. She received the Governors Award of Distinction from Mario Cuomo in 1994.
She was also instrumental in Organizing the early days of Hospice in Otsego County and also played a supporting role in bringing opera to Cooperstown. She volunteered in the community where she was needed. Her memberships also included the Unitarian Universalist Church in Oneonta.
Ellen spent the last seven years of life at the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown and two months at Valley Health Services Inc., Herkimer. The family would like to extend their thanks to all the wonderful caregivers at both facilities.
Ellen is survived by Ada and Ralph Blanchard of Herkimer, Ralph and Ellen Larsen, Carlsbad, CA, and Linn and Judy Larsen of Carlsbad, CA, also Edith Wilson and Jean Hobbs. Survivors include grandchildren; Lesa, Lars, Eric, Cristi, Mark, Curt, Cindy and Inger, nine great grandchildren, nieces and nephews in Denmark and Florida.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday August 20, 2000 at 5:00 PM in the First Presbyterian Church, 25 Church Street, Cooperstown, NY.
