Obituary

HERKIMER-Ethel Mae Eckler age 89, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning February 25, 2016 in Folts Home. She had the support and comfort of her loving family at her side. Ethel was born on July 11, 1926 in Herkimer, daughter of the late Archie John and Ruby Hight Hoke. A lifelong area resident she was raised and educated in Herkimer. On September 2, 1944 she was united in marriage to Donald H. Eckler in Schuyler. They made their home and raised their family in Jordanville. Mrs. Eckler first worked as a shipping clerk for Duofold Company and later for UNIVAC, retiring in 1988. Ethel had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Emanuel Bible Church in Mohawk. For several years she led youth bible studies in Dennison Corners Church and Emanuel Bible Church. She was a true servant of her Lord and Savior. To those who knew her she was gracious, caring and dedicated to her church and family. She possessed a faithful, compassionate and friendly manner that left you with a warm feeling whenever you were with her. Mrs. Eckler was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt as well as great grandma. She will be dearly missed. Surviving are her devoted husband of seventy-one years Donald, two daughters and their husbands, Kaye and David Smith of Mohawk, Jean and Thomas Fenton of West Winfield, two brothers, John Hoke of Mohawk, Alfred Hoke of Salisbury, four sisters, Helen Healey, Marguerite Hall, Irene Vandenberg all of Herkimer, Sharon Bosch of Little Falls, six cherished grandchildren, Carol Macrina and husband Anthony of Mohawk, Donald Smith and wife Lori of WA, David Smith and wife Julia of Bedford, VA, Aaron Smith and companion Emilee Konchar of Milford, Jay Fenton and wife Donna of Middletown, DE, Stephen Fenton and wife Sarah of Mebane, NC, sixteen great grandchildren whom she loved dearly, many nieces, nephews and several cousins. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by seven brothers, Nelson, Kenneth, Ira, Archie, Arthur, Robert and Ernest Hoke, one sister, Eleanor Hardy. Funeral service for Mrs. Eckler will be on Saturday March 12, 2016 at 11:00 am in the Dennison Corners Community Church, Mohawk. Interment will be later this spring in Cedarville Cemetery. The family wishes to express a special thankyou to all the nurses at Folts Home for all the love shown to Ethel and her family over the years. Also to Pastor Gary Wilcox, Pastor David Tossi and Pastor Don King for the pastoral care that was shown to Mrs. Eckler. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Emanuel Bible Church, 54 West Main Street; Mohawk, NY 13407. Envelopes will be available at the church service.
