Obituary

MOHAWK-Eugene D. Cunningham, a Marine Corp veteran of Iwo Jima, died in Little Falls on January 31, 2014. Born on September 3, 1921 on Cole Hill, Hubbardsville, NY at the farm of his maternal grandparents, he was the son of John and Clara (Furner) Cunningham. He attended local schools and he graduated from Mohawk High School with the Class of 1940. Mr. Cunningham enlisted in the United State Marine Corps in July, 1942. As a radio operator with the 4th Marine Division, he saw action at Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the Presidential Commendation with three stars, the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon. He married Rita Murray on August 3, 1946 at Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk with the Reverend James B. Brennock officiating. Mrs. Cunningham pre-deceased him on November 15, 2007. Mr. Cunningham was employed by Oneida National Bank and Trust Company for 38 years, retiring in 1984 as Senior Vice President for Branch Operations and Director of Security. Following his retirement, Mr. Cunningham assisted Sr. Rachel Riccardelli, CSJ and Mrs. Louise Leonard to establish a Catholic Charities program in Herkimer County. He was the groups first treasurer and served as a charter member of its board of directors. He was also active in its RSVP program. He was a lifelong member of the Blessed Sacrament Church and served as a trustee of the parish as well as treasurer of its Bishops Appeal, and a member of its parish council and building committee. Mr. Cunningham also served his community in several capacities. He was a member and president of the Mohawk Central School Board of Education, a member and chairman of the German Flatts Fire District, a member of the Mohawk Cemetery Commission, a member of the Herkimer County Sewer District, a Village of Mohawk Trustee and the 69th Mayor of Mohawk. He is survived by three daughters: Eileen Kipper (Gene), Loree Gallagher (Gareld) Maureen Snyder (Gary); two sons: Very Reverend Mark Cunningham and Shawn Cunningham (Cynthia). He leaves eight grandchildren: Bill McCoy, Ryan McCoy, Mary Gurtowski, Megan Dellecese, Aaron Kipper, Leah Cunningham, Brittany and Nicole Snyder. His great-grandchildren include Matthew, Morgan, Elizabeth Rose, Kipper and Hadley. Mr. Cunningham is also survived by a sister-in-law, Marge Yardley. In addition to his wife and his parents, he was predeceased by a devoted sister, Catherine Scoones, and by his brothers: Francis, Harold and Jack as well as his son-in-law and special friend Bill McCoy. Calling hours at the Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street in Herkimer will take place on Tuesday, February 4th from 5:00 until 8:00pm. Mr. Cunninghams Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by his son Father Mark Cunningham, will take place at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Mohawk at 11:00 am on Wednesday, February 5th. Spring burial, with military honors, will take place in the family plot at Mohawk Cemetery at a time to be announced. Those who wish to remember Mr. Cunningham in a special way are invited to consider the Blessed Sacrament Church in Mohawk. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Little Falls Hospital for their excellent, excellent care.
