RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Eunice Emily Newkirk, age 96, formerly of West James Street, passed away peacefully on Monday evening August 26, 2013 in Folts Home, Herkimer. She was born on March 21, 1917 in Charlston Four Corners, daughter of the late Charles and Alice Wood Cole.A lifelong area resident she was raised and educated in Manaus.On October 9, 1941 she was united in marriage with Clarence Mitchell in Saint Marys Church Canajoharie.They shared a loving union of thirty-seven years until his passing on December 23, 1978.She later married Harry Newkirk on November 20, 1982 in Amsterdam. He passed away in October of 1984. Mrs. Newkirk came to Richfield Springs in 1992 coming from New Hampshire. Eunice had a strong faith in God and was a member of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs. In her leisure time she enjoyed crocheting, crewel work and crafts.She was also an avid reader.To all who knew her she was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family especially her cherished grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.She will be greatly missed. Surviving are her two daughters and their husbands, Maureen and David Kennedy of Richfield Springs, Janice and Thomas Trefethan of Lehigh, FL, six grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.Besides her parents and husbands Clarence and Harry she was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Cole, one sister, Beatrice Cole and a granddaughter, Traci Trefethan. Funeral service for Mrs. Newkirk will be at 11:00 am on Saturday August 31st in the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs.The Reverend Mark Ioset, Pastor will officiate.Interment in the Christian Church Cemetery, Charleston Four Corners will take place at a later time convenient to the family. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Herkimer County Humane Society.Envelopes will be available at the church. Funeral arrangements are with J.
