Obituary

RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Eva Haffner age 91 of Park Street passed away peacefully on Friday December 21, 2012 in Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown. She had the comfort of her loving family at her side. She was born on May 12, 1921 in Yugoslavia, daughter of the late Stephan and Anna Weisbarth Schanz. Eva was raised in Europe and was educated in European schools.She was first married to Johann Thiel who was killed in World War II. In 1950 she came to America from Germany. She was married to Emil Haffner who preceded her in death in 1964. Mrs. Haffner had worked as a seamstress in various local dress factories, had also worked as a cook at the Palmer House Restaurant in Richfield Springs and for fifteen years at Sure Catch.She retired in 1991. Eva had a strong belief in God and was a member of Saint Joseph Worker Church in Richfield Springs.Her favorite past time was walking. You could count on her taking daily walks throughout Richfield Springs.Remarkably, she was walking up until this last week. To all who knew her, she was a kind, caring and hopeful lady.She was happiest when she was surrounded by here many friends and family especially her cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed. Surviving her are two daughters and their husbands, Monica and Richard Harris, Ann and David A. Young all of Richfield Springs, five grandchildren, Patricia Smicinski and her husband Robert of Johnstown, Michael Harris of Big Clifty, KY, T. Scott Harris of St. Simons Island, GA, David Young and his wife Tracy of Jordanville and Brian Young of Camden, eight great grandchildren, Matthew and Julie Smicinski, Olivia Harris, Christopher, Joshua, Hanna, Samantha and Evan Young, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents and husband Emil she was predeceased by her son Steven Haffner in 2010, two brothers, Adam and Valentene Schanz and one sister, Barbara Geiger. Funeral from J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street; Richfield Springs on Thursday morning at 10:30 am.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Joseph the Worker Church, Richfield Springs at 11:00 am.The Reverend Matthew Wetsel, pastor will officiate.Interment will take place later this spring.The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the American Cancer Society of the Richfield Spring s Emergency Rescue Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
