RICHFIELD SPRINGS-Evelyn Sohmer Hertel Gillen age 85 of High Street entered into eternal rest on Tuesday morning August 5, 2003 in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.
She was born on October 15, 1917 in Queens daughter of the late Clarence and Antoinette Costello Sohmer. Evelyn was raised and educated in Queens. On October 16, 1937 she married Roy Hertel in Saint Lukes Church in Whitestone, Queens, a blessed union of forty-two years until his passing on April 11, 1980. She later married James Gillen on October 22, 1983 in Middleburgh. He preceded her in death on September 24, 1991.
Mrs. Gillen was a member of Saint Josephs Church, Richfield Springs where she belonged to the church Rosary Altar Society.
Surviving are one daughter; Evelyn and her husband John A. DeFino of Richfield Springs, a granddaughter; Lisa and her husband Greg Hareld of San Diego, CA, a grandson Josh and his wife Brenda DeFino of Lancaster, a special niece Michelle and her husband Bill Dietrich of Bradenton, FL, one sister Lillian Lenz of Largo, FL, two great granddaughters; Chandler and Carly Hareld of SanDiego, CA, many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and two husbands two infant sons Joseph Roy Hertel and Michael Roy Hertel and a sister Adelaide Phillips preceded her in death.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 am in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Chapel in Patchogue, Long Island. The funeral will then process to Calverton National Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with her first husband Roy Hertel. There will be a Memorial Mass held for Mrs. Gillen in Saint Josephs Church Richfield Springs on Tuesday August 12, 2003 at 9:00 am. Funeral arrangements are with J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, Richfield Springs.
