HERKIMER-Everett J. Lamphere, age 84, of State Route #2, passed away on Wednesday, October 10, 2007, in his home. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side.
He was born on July 20, 1923, in the town of Fairfield, son of the late Minnie Lamphere. A lifelong area resident he was raised and educated n Fairfield. A veteran of World War II he served with the US Army 101st Airborne Division in the battles at Ardennes; Central Europe; the D-Day Invasion of Normandy and the Rhineland including the Battle of the Bulge. For his bravery and valor he was the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal; Good Conduct Medal; Distinguished Unit Badge; European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with Bronze Arrowhead. He was honorably discharged on September 23, 1945 at Fort Dix, NJ, attaining the rank of Sergeant.
It was during the war that he met Helen Chumley. They were united in marriage on July 4, 1943, in Atlanta, GA. A loving and devoted union of sixty-three years until her passing on February 3rd of this year. They had made their home in the town of Herkimer since 1945.
After the war Mr. Lamphere first worked for the Standard Furniture Company in Herkimer until its closing. He then went to work for Hale Manufacturing in Herkimer and later for Remington Arms Co., Ilion, retiring from the Arms in 1981.
In 1968 he and his wife had started and co-owned, Evs Drive-In on State Route # 28 which they successfully operated for fifteen years. They both permanently retired in 1983.
Everett had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Herkimer Reformed Church. He loved the outdoors and in his leisure time enjoyed hunting and fishing.
To his many friends they will always remember his down to earth manner. Most conversations with him were frank and to the point. But you could always feel his warmth and friendship whenever you were with him. He will be greatly missed.
Surviving are his son, Kevin L Lamphere and his wife Sandra of Herkimer, a daughter Linda Ann Lamphere of Erin, two brothers Kenneth Dager and his wife JoAnn of Port Leyden, Richard Dager of Fairfield, one sister, Reta Kelly and her husband Carl (Bob), two grandsons, Dustin E. Lamphere and Todd Lamphere, a niece, Carla Mackey and her husband Dan of Stockton, NJ, two nephews and their wives, Dan and Kathy Kelly of Sherrill, Scott and Patty Kelly of Park City, UT and other cousins.
It was Mr. Lampheres wish that a funeral with military honors be private and at a time convenient to the family. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the American Cancer Society.
