ILION - Fay I. Leonard, 72, of Second Avenue, passed away on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 14, 2002, in her home after a long illness with her loving family at her side.
She was born on March 11, 1929, in Mohawk, daughter of the late Smith Edward and Mildred Moyer Mabbett. Fay was raised in Mohawk and graduated from Mohawk High School. On Aug. 30, 1947, she married Howard L. "Boots" Leonard in the Mohawk Reformed Church, a devoted union of 49 year until his passing on Nov. 8, 1996.
Mrs. Leonard was a warm and caring person. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her friends and family, especially her 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Surviving are three sons and their wives, Terry A. and Linda Leonard of Ilion, Kevin L. and Sandra Leonard of Ilion, Aaron J. and Linda Leonard of Brooklyn; three daughters and their husbands, Sally and Ralph Pugia of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Robin and Keith Brandon of Middleburg, Fla. and Julie and Thomas Kehoe of Ilion; one sister, Shirley Schwasnick of Mohawk; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and canine friend, Bear Kehoe.
Besides her parents and husband, Howard, she was preceded in death by a sister, June Greyback; two brothers, Dorr and Clyde Mabbett; and two grandchildren, Rhiannon and Dustyn Boyer.
Funeral service will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer. The Rev. Donald Battjes, pastor of the Herkimer Reformed Church, will officiate. Mrs. Leonard will be laid to rest in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, town of Little Falls, later this spring.
The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.
