HERKIMER-Fernabelle Comstock, age 92, passed away on Wednesday November 5, 2014, at the age of 92 while a resident of the Folt's Homes located in Herkimer. Fern was born July 16, 1922 in Herkimer and was the daughter of Harry and Bertha (Ainsworth) Jones. She was a graduate of Herkimer High School and was a life-long resident of Herkimer and Ilion with the exception of brief periods of residence near her sons' homes in N. Tonawanda, NY and in El Cajon, CA. During WWII Fern was a volunteer nurse's aide at Herkimer Memorial Hospital. She was also a reporter/photographer for the Utica Newspaper during that period until 1945. She briefly resumed work for the paper in the late 1960s for a few years. Fern was married to Martin J. Comstock in the First Baptist Church of Herkimer on October 27, 1945. They were happily married for 53 years. Fern was the consummate homemaker and mother for her family. She is survived by her two sons and their wives, Jim (Mary Jo) Comstock of El Cajon, CA and Burt (Lucy) Comstock of Lake View, NY. Six grandchildren, Jason Comstock of N. Tonawanda and Alenda Fasciana of Hamburg, NY, as well as Christopher, Scott, Joseph and Donald DeMars all residing in California and fourteen great grandchildren and eight great, great grandchildren. Fern was preceded in death by her husband, Martin, in January 1999. She was also preceded by both of her parents as well as step-father, Louis Tucker. The family will be present in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc. 115 Court Street, Herkimer on Friday, November 14th from 9:00 am until 10:00 am to receives friends and relatives. A memorial service will take place at 10:00 am in the funeral home with the Reverend Ronald Fralick officiating. Interment of cremains of Fernabelle and Martin will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, Herkimer.
