RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Florence R. Ames age 97 of Delmar and former long time resident of Richfield Springs passed away after a brief illness on Monday afternoon August 27, 2007 in Saint Peters Hospital, Albany.
She was born on September 12, 1909 in Greenwich, daughter of the late Charles B. and Marion L. Langdon Roberson. Florence was raised in Greenwich and was a graduate of Greenwich High School. She furthered her education graduating from Morrisville Normal School.
On June 30, 1934 she was united in marriage with Murry W. Ames in Greenwich. A loving and devoted union of forty-three years he preceded her in death in 1977. Prior to her marriage she taught school in Greenwich. A resident of Richfield Springs for many years she and her husband owned and operated their family dairy farm. Upon the passing of her husband in 1977, she completed his term in office as a Member of the Otsego County Board of Representatives.
Mrs. Ames had a strong belief in God and was a member of Saint Johns Episcopal Church Richfield Springs. At one time she was a member of the Richfield Grange, Otsego County Pomona Grange, the New York State and National Grange. She was also a member of Ganowauges Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Richfield Springs Senior Citizens.
Florence was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be truly missed.
Surviving are one son, Langdon Ames and his wife Donna of Richfield Springs, two daughters, Bertha Blair and her husband Thomas with whom she had recently resided, of Delmar, Marilyn (wife of the late Reverend George N.) Sayles of Lincoln, RI, a sister Helen Sisco and her husband Donald, thirteen grandchildren, Anne Miller, Thomas Blair Jr., Douglas, Bradley and Gregory Ames, Sharon Decker, Carol Wright, Janet Sylvester, Philip, Stephen and John Sayles, Catherine Shepherd and Elizabeth Hall, twenty-seven great grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Shirley Ames Edwards along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents and husband Murry she was preceded in death by a brother, William Roberson, two sisters, Louise Mullahy and Marjorie Reynders.
Funeral service with Holy Eucharist from the Book of Common Prayer will be held on Saturday at 11:00 am in Saint Johns Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs. The Reverend John Dixon Bartle, Rector will officiate. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs. The family will be present in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs to receive relatives and friends on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 until 8:00 pm. As an alternative to flowers expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Saint Johns Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs or the charity of your choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
