HERKIMER-Frederick Clifford Spogen Jr. age 81, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening May 23, 2015 in his home. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side. Fred was born on July 5, 1933 in Palmerton, PA, son of the late Frederick C. Sr. and Marjorie Baer Spogen. He was a graduate of Massanutten Military Academy in Woodstock, VA. He furthered his education at Temple University receiving a Bachelor's degree in Pharmacology. A Korean War veteran, he enlisted in the US Air Force on September 9, 1952. He was a member of the 3650th Support Squadron where he received the National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged on August 31, 1960 attaining the rank of Airman First Class. On July 23rd, 1956 he was united in marriage with the former Yvonne Elaine Riegel in Seneca Falls. They came to Herkimer from Seneca Falls in 1963 and in 1964 he purchased Gallinger's Drug Store on North Main Street which he operated successfully for thirty-three years. In 1997 he sold the drug store to Rite-Aid Drugs and worked as their pharmacist for four years until he retired in 2001. After retiring from the drug store and to stay active, he worked part time for Bruce Ward Real Estate in Herkimer. Mr. Spogen had a strong faith in God and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer. He had a real sense of community, having served as a Trustee for the Village of Herkimer, was a member of Herkimer Elks Lodge # 1439 B.O.P.E., Herkimer Lodge # 423 Free & Accepted Masons, Herkimer Rotary Club and the National Rifle Association. In his leisure time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and spending time with his many friends and family, especially his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchild. To those who knew Fred he was a helpful and caring gentleman who many times left his bed in the middle of the night to deliver medicine to someone in need. Any conversation with him was always straight and to the point but you always felt a warmth and friendship whenever you were with him. He will be truly missed. Surviving him are his devoted wife of fifty-eight years, Yvonne, a daughter, Valerie Ellen and husband Tony Bettis of Indialantic, FL, two sons and their wives, Frederick C. III and Teresa Spogen of Ocala, FL, David Bradley and Roxanne Spogen of Rochester, a brother-in-law, Dr. Frederick Riegel and his wife Ginny of Seneca Falls, fourteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Marjorie Heydenrich. Calling for Mr. Spogen will be on Sunday June 21st from 1:00 until 3:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. A funeral service will follow at 3:00 pm in the Funeral Home with the Reverend Jill Stellman officiating. Interment will take place in the Restvale Cemetery, Seneca, NY at a later time. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the American Cancer Society or the Herkimer County Humane Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Members of Herkimer Lodge # 1439 B.P.O.E. are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:00 pm for ritualistic services.
