Obituary

Gary Richard Hawkins, age 63, of Herkimer, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, January 9, 2016, at his brother Toms home. His family and beloved dog Abby were at his side. He was born on November 1, 1952 in Herkimer, a son of the late George C. Sr. and Ruth V. Wicks Hawkins. Gary was raised and educated in Herkimer. Mr. Hawkins was a skilled carpenter with tremendous talents that were appreciated by many. He resided in California from 2001 until 2011, when he returned to Herkimer and continued his contracting business until this past year. He was of the Episcopal faith. He held membership with in the East Herkimer Fish and Game club and Holland Heights Golf Club. His leisure time was spent with golfing, collecting antiques, refinishing furniture, horseback riding and especially camping with his grandchildren. Gary had an outgoing personality with a great sense of humor. A true friend to many, he was a caring person who was there to lend a helping hand to family, friends, and strangers alike. He will be sadly missed by his family and many friends including Lee, Kurt, Piggy, Tony, John A., Jake, John E. and Skip. Surviving are his daughter Ashley Hawkins and her companion, Kevin Krenichyn, grandchildren Trenton, Lukas and Alaina, all of Frankfort, his sisters, Mary LaGase of Ilion, Carol Alexander and her husband Robert of Oneida, brothers, William Bateman of CA, George Hawkins Jr. and his wife Linda of TN, Thomas Hawkins and his wife Pat of New Hartford, nieces and nephews, Jeff and Shelly LaGase, Dwayne and Erin Dawson, Robert and Lisa Alexander, Scott and Lisa Alexander, Chris and Jaime Alexander, Tricia Hawkins and Fiance Matt, Michael and Kim Capasso, Joe and Jaime George, Michael, and Matthew Hawkins, Rick and Christine Hawkins, Jim and Lynn Hawkins, Tammy Wood, Michele, Nicole and Alicia Bateman, several great nieces, nephews, cousins, his aunt Ella, and his canine companion Abby. Besides his parents George and Ruth Hawkins he was preceded in death by two nephews Billy LaGase, John Alexander, three nieces, Kim, Kelly and Kari Bateman. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, at 11:00 am in Christ Episcopal Church, Herkimer. The Reverend Sally Heiligman will officiate. Interment will take place later this spring in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will be present in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, to receive relatives and friends on Thursday evening from 4:00 until 7:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donation to Herkimer Humane Society or Hospice & Palliative Care Inc. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and church.
