HERKIMER - George D. Anderson Doug age 89 of Farber Lane passed away peacefully on Sunday morning July 27, 2008 in Valley Health Services Inc., Herkimer.
He was born on April 30, 1919 in Peekskill, son of the late Peter A. and Mabel Crisfield Anderson Doug was raised in Peekskill and was a graduate of Peekskill High School. He furthered his education, earning his Masters Degree at Oswego State Teachers College.
A US Army Air Corps veteran he entered in June of 1943 and was a glider pilot with the 306th Troop Carrier Squadron and the 442nd Troop Carrier Group. He served in Normandy, Rhineland and Holland. He was the recipient of the Air Medal, American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. He attained the rank of First Lieutenant and was honorably discharged on January 17, 1946.
On November 21, 1947 he was united in marriage with the former Margery Steiger in Hollis, NY. It was that same year they moved to Herkimer where he accepted a position teaching Industrial Arts and Drivers Education in the Herkimer Central School District. He remained there for thirty-five years, retiring in June of 1977. For many years he spent his summers at Oswego State Teachers College where he taught Drivers Education to teachers who were going to teach the subject in their school districts.
Mr. Anderson had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Herkimer Reformed Church where for many years he sang in the church choir. He was also a Deacon and Elder, Sunday School Superintendent, Church Basketball Coach and Youth Fellowship Leader. Doug had a deep sense of community he was a member of the NYS Retired Teachers Association, had served as a member and Board Chairman for the Valley United Way as well as a member and Board Chairman for the Mohawk Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was honored by the Red Cross for over the years donating more than five gallons of blood to the Red Cross Blood Drives.
In more recent years he became known for his elaborate collection of old phonographs and phonograph records. He started his own business the Old Phony Shop Museumwhich he owned and operated until he became ill.
Doug will always be remembered as a caring and helpful person. He was a friend to many and will never be forgotten.
Surviving besides his loving wife of sixty-one years, Margery are two sons and their wives, Peter and Kathleen Anderson of Ilion, Christopher and Susan Goodier Anderson of Westmoreland, one brother, Robert Anderson of Peekskill, two grandchildren, Megan Anderson of Mesa, AZ, Tamara Amendolare of Clifton Park, one great grandson, Ryan Mason Anderson, several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Anderson.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday August 9, 2008 at 11:00 am in the Herkimer Reformed Church with the Reverend Mark Andersen, Pastor officiating. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to Herkimer Reformed Church, North Main Street, Herkimer, NY 13350. Funeral arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home Inc., Herkimer.
