Obituary

HERKIMER-George E. Gilbert Jr. age 96, of Gray Street, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday June 25, 2014 at the home of his daughter Cynthia Lynch in Stanley, NY. He was born on April 20, 1918 in Herkimer, son of the late George E. and Ruth Wood Gilbert. A lifelong Herkimer resident he was a graduate of Herkimer High School with the class of 1936 and furthered his education at Utica College. In World War II, George answered the call of his country, enlisting in the US Navy on August 14, 1942. During his time served with the Navy he was an Aviation Machinist and Catapult Operator aboard the USS Guadalcanal. He was honorably discharged on January 8, 1946. On July 6, 1946 he was united in marriage with the former Jane Cress in Saint Francis deSales Church Herkimer. They shared a loving and devoted union of fifty-four years until her passing on April 3, 2001, For forty-one years, Mr. Gilbert was employed as a machinist for the Remington Arms Company in Ilion. He retired in 1980. After his retirement he worked as a Directors Assistant for Fenner Funeral Home in Herkimer. Active in his community he was a member of Herkimer Lodge #423 Free and Accepted Masons for over fifty years and the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post # 25, Mohawk. To all who knew George, they will never forget a kind, caring and good natured man with a quiet sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by his friends and family, especially his cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. Surviving him are four daughters, Cynthia A. Lynch of Stanley, Karen Gilbert of Paso Robles, CA, Mary Ellyn Levy and her husband Steven of Woodridge, Mary Ann Gilbert of Herkimer, four grandchildren, Karen, Brian and Douglas Lynch and Michael Jon Levy, six great-grandchildren, Kaylie, Nathaniel, Andrew "AJ", Whitney, Luke and Abigail, several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife Jane, he was preceded in death by a brother Donald Gilbert. Calling hours for Mr. Gilbert will be on Tuesday July 8, 2014 from 12:00 to 1:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. Funeral service will follow in the funeral home at 1:00 pm. The Reverend Janet Gleason, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls will officiate. Interment with military honors accorded by the US Navy will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the American Heart Association or the charity of your choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
