HERKIMER-George Graves age 92 of 104 North Washington Street formerly of 317 Gray Street entered into eternal rest on Monday morning August 11, 2003 in Little Falls Hospital.
He was born on August 9, 1911 in Syracuse, son of the late George Ezra and Emma Vinal Graves. George was raised in Herkimer and was a graduate of Herkimer High School. Upon graduation from High School he furthered his education at the Collegiate Center in Syracuse University.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II he fought in the Eastern Mandates, Philippine Islands and Rykus. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
On July 30, 1948 he married Edith Sprague in the Ilion United Methodist Church. Theirs was a devoted union of fifty-one years until Mrs. Graves passing on April 12, 2003. For 19 years they resided in Mohawk, moving to Herkimer in 1969.
For twenty-four years Mr. Graves was an inspector for UNIVAC, retiring in 1972. He had also worked as bar tender for the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post in Mohawk.
He was a member of the Crowley Barnum American Legion Post # 35 Mohawk where he was Bingo Chairman for thirty years, a life member of Michael S. Pliseck Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 1459, Herkimer, a Herkimer Volunteer Fire Fighter he was a past president of the Fort Dayton Steamers.
He will be greatly missed by many, especially his family. Surviving him are one son; Rex and his wife Jean Graves of New Hartford, two daughters and their husbands; Sandy and Wayne DeCarr of Warners, Cynthia and Derek Woertendyke of West Oneonta, a sister Ruth Miller of Herkimer, his uncle John Graves of Newport, seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren several nieces including Judy Miller of New York City and several nephews.
Funeral service will be on Wednesday at 11:00 am in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. The Reverend Patricia Lawrence, Pastor of the First Baptist Church Herkimer will officiate. Mr. Graves will be laid to rest in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends in the funeral home on Tuesday (today) from 4:00 until 7:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to Folts Homes, Herkimer. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
