Obituary

EAST HERKIMER-George E. Gregg age 84 of the Baptist Retirement Center, Scotia and formerly of 133 Elm Avenue entered into eternal rest on Tuesday evening May 27, 2003 in Ellis Hospital, Schenectady. He was born on June 21, 1918 in Fayetteville, son of the late Palmer and Ida Wilson Gregg. George was raised in Fayetteville and was a graduate of Fayetteville High School class of 1938. Upon completing high school he moved to Herkimer where Roy Coakley employed him. On January 1, 1942 he married Joyce Matteson in Fayetteville, a loving and devoted union of fifty-three years until her passing on October 31, 1995. An honorably discharged US Army veteran of World War II he served with the Military Police in North Africa, France and Italy. He was captured and held as a prisoner of war for nine months in Germany being released in June of 1945. George was the recipient of the Prisoner of War Medal. After his military service he returned to Herkimer where he joined his brother at Gaffey Appliance Store, which later became Gregg Appliance. Mr. Gregg retired in 1985. He was a member of the Herkimer Reformed Church, the East Herkimer Fish and Game Club, the Michael S. Pliseck VFW Post # 4915, Herkimer Lodge #423 Free and Accepted Masons, the Ziyara Shrine, Valley of Utica Scottish Rite. From 1969 to 1999 he served on the town of Herkimer Planning Board. In his leisure time he enjoyed snowmobiling, three wheeling and his model trains. Surviving are two daughters and their husbands; Sarah and Jim Hartmann of Scotia, Lisa and Mark Miniat and their children Victoria and Cody all of Mattawan, MI, one son; Charles and his wife Kathleen Gregg of Wilmore, KY, a step-granddaughter Cynthia Hartmann McDonald her husband Daniel and sons Sean and Braeden, nephews; Edward Gregg, Dr. John Gregg, Robert Gregg, Palmer Gregg and their families. Besides his parents and wife Joyce he was preceded in death by two brothers and sister-in-laws; Marshall and Irene Gregg and Janice and Palmer Gregg. A graveside memorial service with military honors will take place on Saturday May 31, 2003 at 11:00 am in Oak Hill Cemetery where he will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife Joyce. The Reverend David Kirkpatrick, Chaplain of the Masonic Home, Utica will officiate. The family has requested that memorial donations to the American Heart Association, the American Cancer Association, the American Lung Association or the Baptist Retirement Center, 297 Ballston Avenue, Scotia, NY 12302 be considered. Funeral arrangements were made with Fenner Funeral Home Inc., Herkimer.
