MOHAWK George H. Sweet, Jr. age 86 passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 19, 2013, with his loving family by his side. He was born on January 20, 1926, in Little Falls, the son of the late George and Olive Roback Sweet. A lifelong area resident, George proudly served his country in the Army Signal Corp, in the Pacific Theater during World War II. On June 10, 1950, he married the former Shirley Nichols in Little Falls. Mr. Sweet was a lifetime member of the Labors International Union of North America Local 35. Upon his retirement he went to work for the Folts Home and the Herkimer County Co-operative Extension. He held membership with the Herkimer Veterans of Foreign War Post # 4915. He enjoyed fishing and gardening. He will always be remembered as a loving husband and family man. His happiest memories were times spent with his family. If you knew him; you had the feeling you were very special to him. He is survived by his devoted wife Shirley of sixty-two years, a sister Ruth Laventure, five daughters, Shelley Johnson of Tavares, FL, Nadine and Charles Tripple, Michele Haire, Brenda and Raymond Reynolds all of Mohawk, Angela Sweet-Cloud of Utica, a son, Franklyn and Irene Sweet of Mohawk, a niece, Olive Shirley who resided with them, a sister-in-law, Gloria and John Joyce, eight grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother John, three sisters, Margaret, Olive and Jane, two children, Robin and Terry, son-in-law Daniel Johnson, daughter-in-law Donna Sweet, and a great-granddaughter Kaitlyn. The family will receive friends and family from 4:00p.m. to 6:00p.m. Wednesday in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. Members of the Herkimer V.F.W. Post #4915 will conduct a military service at 6:00 p.m. followed by Sister Mary Jo Tallman, Parish Life Director of Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk who will officiate the funeral service. Interment with military honors will take place this spring in Salisbury Rural Cemetery. The family would like to thank Dr. David Liu, his clinic staff and the entire staff of Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital for their loving and compassionate care.
