HERKIMER - George L. Thierry age 88 of Willow Avenue passed away on Thursday evening July 5, 2007 in Valley Health Services Inc., Herkimer.
He was born on September 25, 1918 in Frankfort son of the late George and Sadie Ruland Thierry. A lifelong area resident he was educated in both Frankfort and West Winfield Schools.
On November 13, 1940 he enlisted in the US Army where he served in World War II with Battery A 63rd FA Battalion, fighting in the Central Pacific, the Southern Philippines and New Guinea. George was a recipient of the American Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star; Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on June 3, 1945 attaining the rank of Corporal.
Upon returning home after the war he was united in marriage on August 30, 1946 with the former Ethel Lowery in Herkimer. A loving and devoted union of fifty years, until her passing on January 5, 1997.
Mr. Thierry worked for eleven years at the Remington Arms Company, Ilion and in 1956 took a position with UNIVAC where he worked for twenty-six years, retiring in 1982.
To his friends he will be remembered as a strong willed man who enjoyed his many hunting, fishing and camping trips with them and the great adventures that they all shared. George had a strong belief in God and was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 38, Herkimer.
He is survived by a niece, Ann Waller and her husband Donald of Cold Brook, a nephew Douglas Thierry and his wife Karen of Newport along with several nieces and nephews in California. Besides his parents and wife Ethel he was preceded in death by a brother Mahlon Thierry in 2002.
Funeral service will be on Tuesday at 10:00 am in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. The Reverend David Kirkpatrick will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
