RICHIELD SPRINGS-George D West, age 64, passed away unexpectedly on Friday August 17, 2017 at his home in Richfield Springs. He will be greatly missed by his loving family.
George was born January 26, 1953 in Cooperstown, son of the late William and Jane (Trask) West both of Richfield Springs. George was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School with the class of 1971. After graduation, on September 9, 1971 George enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served for the next six years as a Hospital Corpsman. He was honorably discharged on June 22, 1977 attaining the rank of HM2. After his military service he moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida and went to work for the United States Postal Service for 30 years, retiring in 2012.
Mr. West enjoyed many sports and outdoor activities but his true passion
was baseball, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Ft. Lauderdale American Legion where he enjoyed helping to cook and serve the homeless on many occasions. After returning to Richfield Springs he joined the local American Legion Post # 616.
George is survived by his son Jesse, his wife Andrea and his granddaughter
Ashelyn of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, one brother Charles and his companion
Debra Laveck of Richfield Springs, two sisters, Teresa Suhocki and husband Larry of Richfield Springs, Debra Schell and husband Donald of Oppenheim, along with many nieces and nephews and their children.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 12:00 noon until 2pm on Saturday, September 2nd in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James Street
Richfield Springs. A funeral service will be immediately after at 2:00pm in the funeral home. Reverend Jill Stillman, Priest in charge, of St. Johns Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs. Interment with full Military Honors provided the US Navy and American Legion Post #616 will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs.
Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Richfield Youth Sports, PO BOX 458 Richfield Springs, NY 13439. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
A reception will be held following the burial at the Vets Club on Lake Street
in Richfield Springs.
