MOHAWK-Gerald David Lynch, age 94,of Oneida Castle,formerly of Mohawk ,passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon March 9, 2019 in Faxton-Saint Lukes Medical Center. He had the loving comfort of his family at his side.
He was born on August 15, 1924 in Mohawk, son of the late James D. and Bertha Douglass Lynch. Gerald was raised in Mohawk and was a graduate of Mohawk High School with the class of 1943. The day after his graduation he was on his way to answer the call of the country, by enlisting in the US Navy. A World War II veteran he served from June of 1943 until he was honorably discharged in April of 1946 attaining the rank of Torpedoman 3C of the USS Picuda SS-382.
?On November 4, 1965, he was united in marriage to the former Corrine Connie Brown. They shared a loving and devoted union of thirty-five years until her passing on January 18, 2001. Mr. Lynch worked as a Vice President of Huyck United Van Lines in Ilion from 1971 until 1978. In 1978 he went to work as plant manager for Motronics Corp. in Mohawk, retiring in 1989.
?Gerald had a strong belief in God and was a member of Blessed Sacrament RC Church in Mohawk and while living in Oneida Castle was a member of Saint Helenas RC Church in Sherrill. He was a seventy three year member of Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post # 25 Mohawk and a thirty-five year member of the Ilion Elks. In his leisure time he enjoyed playing cards, swimming, boating and watching sporting events on television. He was an avid NY Yankee and NY Giants fan. In his younger years he liked snow mobiling.
?Mr. Lynch will always be remembered as a people person. With his warm and caring way he made friends easily and they were his friend forever. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his many friends and family especially his cherished grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by all.
Surviving him are his daughter Sue Ellen Mathews and her husband Peter with whom he resided in Oneida Castle, three grandchildren, Justin Mathews, Craig Mathews and his wife Teresa, Scott Mathews and his wife Karie, two great grandchildren, Anthony and Rocco Mathews, several nieces, nephews and cousins, and his four legged companion Mia. Besides his parents and wife Connie he was preceded in death by six brothers, Edward, Robert, James, Douglas, Donald and Francis Lynch, two sisters, Mary Traverni and Catherine Miles.
Calling hours for Mr. Lynch will be on Sunday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 1:00pm in Blessed Sacrament RC Church, Mohawk. With the Reverend William Mesmer, Pastor of Saint Helenas RC Church in Sherrill officiating. Interment will take place later this spring in Mohawk Cemetery. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to neighbors Tom and Shelly Sears for always being there for Jerry.
Memorial donations may be made to Blessed Sacrament RC Church, Mohawk or Saint Helenas RC Church, Sherrill. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Members of Crowley Barnum American Legion Post #25 are asked to meet at the funeral home for a 6:30PM for ritualistic services.
