ILION-Gertrude L. Smith age 84 of East North Street, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, September 26, 2012 in Folts Homes, Herkimer. She had the comfort of her loving family at her side. She was born on December 3, 1927 in Herkimer, daughter of the late Fred Gilbert. A lifelong area she was a graduate of Herkimer High School. Gertrude was the widow of Albert Smith Sr. who preceded her in death in 1982. Mrs. Smith has resided in Ilion since 1985, coming from Herkimer. Gertrude was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her many friends and family, especially her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Outside of her home she found much relaxation in walking. Not a day would go by that she wasnt walking to either a store or to visit friends. She will be greatly missed. Surviving are four sons, Albert Smith Jr. and his wife Robin of AZ, Thomas Smith and his wife Tina of Corning, Alan Smith of Herkimer, Earl Smith of Colton, five daughters, Diane Youker and her husband Russell of Dolgeville, Kathy Dunn and her husband Patrick of Ilion, Robin Singer and her husband Michael of Ilion, Susan Davis of Little Falls. Three sisters including Florence Sennett of AZ, twenty-six grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents and husband Albert Sr. she was preceded in death by two sons Leo and Fred Smith, a brother Fred Gilbert and cherished granddaughter Kimberly Ann Dunn. Funeral service will be on Tuesday at 2:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. The Reverend Cathy Lee, chaplain of Folts Homes will officiate. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Monday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM.
