HERKIMER - Gilbert F. Moore age 86 of First Avenue, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday June 18, 2003 in Bassett Healthcare Cooperstown.
He was born on September 21, 1916 in Birmingham, England, son of the late William and Harriett White Moore. Gilbert was raised and educated in Canada. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the US Army in the 82nd Airborne Division. He was stationed in both Italy and North Africa and was a recipient of the E.A.M.E. Ribbon and Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged in 1944.
After his military service he started his own refrigeration and air conditioning business in Herkimer. He relocated the business in Allegheny, California and retired in the 1970s. Gilbert returned to Herkimer in 2001 coming from Sun Valley, Nevada.
On October 10, 2001 he remarried Martha Cruikshank Moore in the New Life Church in Herkimer.
He had a strong belief in God and regularly attended the New Life Church. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in California and Nevada. Mr. Moore was a quite man who enjoyed his friends and family.
Surviving are his wife Martha, one son; Darrel and his wife Elaine Moore of Herkimer, a daughter; Laura and her husband Vito Papa of Ilion, six grandchildren; Lisa Holtz, Rachel Papa, Rebecca Bowmen, Ronald Moore, Dana Moore, Gina Moore, two great grandchildren; Kari Holtz and Steven Neal, several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his son Ronald D. Kelvin Moore US Army veteran who died on November 4, 1968 in Vietnam, three sisters; Ivy Friedman, Muriel Sparrow and Lillian Crane.
Funeral service will take place on Friday at 11:00 am in the New Life Church, 337 Protection Avenue, Herkimer with Pastor Joe Jansen officiating. The family will be present in the church to receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the funeral 10:00 until 11:00 am. Interment with military honors will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the New Life Church. Envelopes will be available at the church. Funeral arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home Inc., Herkimer.
