Obituary

HERKIMER-Gordon Albert Jones age 88 of Lake Streetpassed away peacefully on Thursday afternoon January 31, 2008 in Valley Health Services Inc. He was born on November 11, 1919 in Herkimer, son of the late William R. and Mildred Compo Jones. A lifelong Herkimer resident, he was a graduate of Herkimer High School. On September 30, 1944 he was united in marriage with the former Jane Elizabeth Wood in Sauquoit. They first resided in Ilionand in 1949 moved to Herkimer where they made their permanent home. A loving and devoted union of nearly sixty-two years Mrs. Jones predeceased him on September 11, 2006. For over twenty years Gordon worked as a tool testing technician for the Chicago Pneumatic Company in Utica, retiring in 1978. After his retirement he stayed active owning and operating the Jones Electrical business and in later years working as the church sexton for the First Baptist Church, Herkimer. Gordon had a strong belief in God and was a member of the First Baptist Church, Herkimer. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He put his outdoor skills to good use by serving for several years as a Boy Scout Leader for the First Baptist Church scout troop. Mr. Jones was a unique man, in his leisure time he enjoyed music, both singing and listening. He found much relaxation in writing poetry and had a keen interest in both local history and New York Statehistory. To all who knew him they will never forget his warm smile and down to earth, manner. He was a friend to many and will never be forgotten. Surviving are a son Steven Jones of Utica, two daughters, Janet Riesel and Joan E. Jones both of Herkimer, three grandchildren, Cheryl Cristman and her husband Mike of Herkimer, Mary Clark and her husband Gary of Virginia Beach, VA, Brian Riesel and his wife Brenda of Herkimer, four great-grandchildren, Joseph, Emily and Danielle Riesel all of Virginia Beach, VA and Jenna Riesel of Herkimer, his mother-in-law Harriett Wood of Utica, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents and wife Jane, he was preceded in death by his cherished great-granddaughter Mariah Riesel and his son-in-law, Ernest G. Cub Riesel. Funeral service will be on Saturday at 6:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. The Reverend Patti Lawrence, Pastor of the First Baptist Church Herkimer will officiate. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Poland later this spring at a time to be announced. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Saturday from 2:00 until 5:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Make a Wish Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
