RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Gordon H. Pierson, 74, formerly of Canadarago Street, passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at Otsego Manor, Cooperstown, with his loving sisters by his side. He was born Nov. 28, 1935, in Cooperstown, son of the late Gordon and Laura Congdon Pierson. A lifelong area resident, he was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School. He had worked for Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital as a shuttle-bus driver, retiring in 2003. Mr. Pierson was a very talented and active man. Every day, he could be found riding his bicycle around Canadarago Lake. Gordon was a musically gifted individual who was self-taught and was the last organist to play at the Canadarago Roller Skating Rink in Richfield Springs. As an avid skier, he was a member of the Gunset Ski Bowl and was in the ski patrol. Gordon was also an aviator who held a commercial pilot's license and taught students to fly on a Piper Cub. He was a former member of the Richfield Springs Lodge No. 482 Free and Accepted Masons. To all who knew him, they will never forget his warm smile and friendly manner. He will be greatly missed. Surviving are one brother, Duane and his wife, Joan Pierson, of Richfield Springs; two sisters, Lois Jones of Fredonia and Marilyn Hext and her husband, Greg, of Richfield Springs; and several nieces, nephews and cousins, among them his favorite niece, Laurie Hext of Richfield Springs. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his uncles, aunts and by his brother-in-law, David Jones. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs. The Rev. John Young will officiate. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery in the spring. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Saturday one hour before the funeral service from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. His family would like to thank all the staff at Otsego Manor and Catskill Area Hospice for the wonderful care that he received. There will be a gathering at the Richfield Springs Veterans Club immediately after the funeral service. All are invited.
