UTICA Grace A. Simpson, age 94, of Acacia Village, formerly of Herkimer, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, December 19, 2012 in her home.
Born on July 24, 1918, in Louisville, KY, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Lottie Sherman Lodewick. She was raised and educated in Louisville, KY and graduated from Shawanne High School. On July 15, 1940, she was united in marriage to Walter A. Simpson in Louisville KY forming a loving and devoted union of 68 years until his passing on January 28, 2008. Grace was an amazing woman. Her working career spanned various fields from working as a Comptometer Operator with Brown and William Tobacco Co. in Louisville KY, to her position as a clerical worker at Gleason Works Tool and Die Co. in Rochester, to raising broiler chickens for Beacon Feeds in Marion. During that time she also worked as a cashier for the IGA Food Store in Walworth. She was last employed with C.H. Stewart Co. of Newark, holding various positions in retail including jewelry inspecting. She was a life member of the First Presbyterian Church, as well as being a Past Worthy Matron of Athena Chapter OES, Past Royal Matron of the Amaranth and member of the Evening Star Valley Chapter # 82 Order of the Eastern Star. Grace led a very full life enjoying many hobbies including ceramics and gardening. No task was too challenging for her artistic nature. She was a volunteer for the Friends of the Herkimer Home in Little Falls, demonstrating spinning and weaving to the public. She learned to upholster chairs and enjoyed chair caning. Together with friends, she once gathered reeds from Lake Ontario to weave a rush-bottom chair. Grace will always be remembered as a loving, cheerful, helpful person and will be greatly missed. Surviving are two daughters, Joanna Michalek of Valatie, Roberta Simpson of Little Falls, five grandchildren, John Drollette, and his wife Jessica of Bend Ore, Michelle Drollette and fianc Luke Pepper of Hellertown PA, Anthony Michalek, Donald Michalek and his wife Janice, all of Virginia Beach, Steven Michalek and his wife Linda of Nassau, five great-grandchildren, Andrew, Darrin Elizabeth, Cassandra Grace, and Hazel Michalek. Besides her husband Walter, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Sherman and Ralph Lodewick and a sister Charlotte McManus.
The memorial service has been changes to Friday, December 28th at 3:30 p.m. in Tompkins Chapel at the Masonic Care Community. The family will be present in the chapel to receive relatives and friends from 2:30 until 3:30pm (one hour prior to the funeral service).
All members of the Evening Star Valley Chapter No. 82 O.E.S. are asked to meet at Tompkins Chapel for a 3:30 pm for ritualistic service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Masonic Medial Research Laboratory. Envelopes will be available at the chapel.
