HERKIMER- Grant J. Looman, age 80, of Eureka Avenue, entered into eternal rest on Monday November 10, 2003 in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown. A man of grace, patience and kindness he had his loving family by his side at his passing.
Grant was born on December 27, 1922 in the Town of Manheim son of the late George and Cora Allen Looman. A life long area resident he was educated in Dolgeville Schools and later was a graduate from Nashville Diesel College in Nashville, TN.
A veteran of World War II, he served in Guinea, the Northern Philippines and Luzon. He was honorably discharged in December of 1945 attaining the rank of Technician Fifth Grade.
On April 6, 1946 he married the former Louise M. Risendorph in the First Methodist Church of Herkimer. The Reverend Fred Cotnam officiated at the ceremony making a true testimony of their marriages vows. From that point on Grant and Louise shared fifty-seven years of unselfish love through sickness and in health.
For twenty years he worked for the Standard Furniture Company in Herkimer, retiring in 1966. After his retirement he continued his work as a Master Carpenter until his most recent illness. His craftsmanship can be appreciated throughout the valley.
Mr. Looman was a fifty-year member of the First United Methodist Church of Herkimer/Little Falls and was recently cited by the church for over fifty years of church membership.
To all that knew him they will remember his quiet smile. To his family he was the tower of strength that held them together allowing them to prevail through his sacrifices. He will always be remembered as a loving, caring and hopeful person. To know him was to love him.
Surviving besides his devoted wife Louise, are his beloved son Dorr and his wife Joan Looman of Calabasas, CA, his cherished daughter Anna Looman and her special friend Vern Newtown, one grandson Darren and his wife Melissa Looman, two great-grandchildren his name sake Grant and Kelsie Looman all of Burton, MI along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides his parents, a brother Ralph I. Looman and two sisters Dorothy Pictou and Evelyn Knapp preceded him death.
Funeral service will be on Friday at 10:00 am in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. The Reverend Wrightson Tongue, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls will officiate. Mr. Looman will then be laid to rest with military honors in the family plot in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will be present to receive relatives and friends on Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the memorial fund of Bassett Healthcare Wheel Chair Fund 321 East State Street, Herkimer NY 13350. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
The family wishes to express their appreciation for the compassionate care received from his provider Sheila Gahon FNP and all the caring staff at Bassett Healthcare-Herkimer, the At Home Care Nursing Staff, the fourth floor Special Care Unit of Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown and many special friends and neighbors especially Sharon Godlewski.
