Obituary

RICHFIELD SPRINGS Grant F. Palmer, Jr., age 68, of Union Street passed away peacefully on Monday April 28, 2008 in Bassett Healthcare, he had the comfort of his loving family by his side. He was born April 11, 1940 in Cooperstown a son of the late Grant F. and Marguerite Seamon Palmer. A lifelong Richfield Springs resident he was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School Class of 1958. On November 18, 1967 he married the former Ruth Palmer in Cedarville Community Church. For eleven years Grant worked for the Otsego County Highway Department. He was then appointed as the Village of Richfield Springs Superintendent of Public Works. For 26 years he maintained that position retiring in 2000. Grant had a strong sense of community serving as a Volunteer Fireman, since 1968, for the Richfield Springs Fire Department and had served as Fire Chief from 1976 to 1983. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and many outdoor activities. He will be greatly missed by many especially his family. Surviving besides his wife Ruth of forty years are three sons; Grant F. Palmer, III and his companion Mary Cotton of Little Falls, Gary Palmer and his wife Vicky of South Glens Falls, Bradley Palmer and his companion Jeanette Golicki of Richfield Springs, two daughters; Debra Palmer of Ilion, Jean Palmer of Richfield Springs, a brother Douglas Palmer and his wife Karen of Richfield Springs, a sister; Jean Coones and her companion Lyle Borden of Richfield Springs six grandchildren; Allan, Matthew, Randy, Noelle, Amber and Anthony, six great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by two grandsons Brian Seelbach and Michael Frezza, Jr. and his mother-in-law Alice Palmer. Burial Office from the Book of Common Prayer with Holy Eucharist will be held on Saturday at 11:00 am in Saint Johns Episcopal Church, Richfield Springs. The Reverend John Dixon Bartle, Rector will officiate assisted by The Reverend John Young. Interment will take place in Lakeview Cemetery, Richfield Springs. The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs on Friday from 4:00 until 8:00 pm. Members of the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department are asked to meet at the funeral home on Friday evening at 8:00 pm for services Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Richfield Springs Volunteer Fire Department or Richfield Springs Ambulance Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
