MOHAWK-Grover Kenneth Bennett, age 80, passed away peacefully on Monday morning May 28, 2018 in his home after an extended illness. He had the support and comfort of his loving family at his side. He was born on December 14, 1937 in Herkimer, son of the late Charles and Wauletta Spencer Bennett. Grover was a graduate of VanHornesville Central School. On January 20, 1958 he enlisted in the US Army National Guard, serving active duty for six months and remaining time with the National Guard Reserve. He was honorably discharged on January 19, 1961 attaining the rank of Specialist First Class. On November 1, 1958 he was united in marriage to the former Carole Louise Royce in the Jordanville United Methodist Church. Mr. Bennett was first employed by Remington Arms Company and later Mohawk Data Sciences. He continued his education, graduating from Mohawk Valley Community Collegein 1991. In 1993 he went to work as a Civil Engineering Technician for the New York State Department of Transportation in Utica. He retired in 2003. Grover had a strong faith in God and was a member of the Jordanville Federated Church where he had served on the church council and was a devoted worker as a fund raiser. Mr. Bennett was anactive community member. In his leisure time, he found great joy in coaching Mohawk Little League, Mohawk Pee Wee Wrestling and coaching for the Babe Ruth League. A true sports fan, he followed the New York Giants football, New York Yankees baseball, Notre Dame football, NASCAR and local Dirt Track Racing. He also had a knack for fixing things. Anything broke or damaged, he had a natural gift to be able to repair it. Grover was happiest when he was with his many friends and family especially his cherished grandchildren. He will be sadly missed.
Surviving him are his devoted wife of fifty nine years, Carole, three sons and their wives, Kenneth and Gina Bennett of Fairland, IN, Kyle and Donna Bennett of Rochester, Daniel and Gail Bennett of Mountlake Terrace, WA, seven grandchildren, Dalton, Connor, Justin, Bryan, Kari, Lauren, and Thomas Bennett, two step-grandchildren, Caitlin and Trevor Kane, two brothers and their wives, Spencer and Sharon Bennett of Herkimer, Charles and Bonnie Bennett of Loris, NC, two sisters, Sharlene Parr and her husband Robert of Manlius, Nora Bennett of Clayton, two brothers-in-law, Robert Royce and his wife Gail and Lyle Seaman, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Wauletta Krumholtz and husband Donald, Frances Seaman and a brother-in-law Harvey Tennant.
Calling hours for Mr. Bennett will be on Friday from 5:00 until 7:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. Funeral service will take place on Saturday at 11:00 am at the Jordanville Federated Church with the Reverend Scott Hocking, Pastor officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Rural Cemetery.
