HERKIMER-Harold L. Hutton, Sr. age 85, of Herkimer, died after a long bout with cancer.
He was born December 16, 1919, in Spragueville, NY, the eldest of 16 children of Roy Tate and Bessie Drumb Hutton. He married Irene Stempski January 1, 1944 in Milwaukee. She died in January 1998.
They had nine children: Kathryn (Kitty) and Ron Cross, Tulsa, OK; Sharon Hutton, Fort Plain; Kay (Koki) and Phillip Filipczuk, Grain Valley, MO; Harold, Jr. and Marsha Hutton, Herkimer; Linda and Peter Barney, Potsdam; Kenneth Hutton, Canandaigua; Karen Hutton, Herkimer; Terry and Joe Moore, Ilion. Their youngest child, Petty Officer 3rd Class Robert Hutton died serving his country in February 1978.
He also leaves eleven grandchildren: Jeff Cross, Sicklerville, NJ; Erik and Maryanne Cross, Tulsa; Denise and Dan Perkins, Overland Park, KS; Rachael Filipczuk, Overland Park, KS; Shannon and Gary Weingartner, Grain Valley, MO; Sherri Filipczuk, Roeland Park, KS; Ashley and Ryan Kelly, Ilion; Chelsea Hutton, Herkimer; Justin and Megan Barney, Syracuse; Stephanie and Mike Piccininni, Henderson, NV; Nathaniel Barney, Schenectady; Casey Moore, Jersey City, NJ; Jesse Moore, Ilion; ten great-grandchildren: Rebecca, Riley and Riker Cross, Anthony Harmon, Abigail and Sean Perkins; Kayla and Sandra Weingartner, Troy Kelly, Erin Barney. Surviving siblings are Arthur Hutton, Georgia; Bea and Earl Shane, Syracuse; Joyce Hunsaker, Ogden, UT; Douglas and Joan Hutton, New Lebanon; Carolyn and Don Fox, Redfield. He also leaves special family friends, Mary Jane Hutton and Ronald (Iney) Paul and his beloved dog, Pepper.
Harold was a Marine Corps veteran, serving as a field radio operator in the First Marine Division at the Battle of Guadalcanal during World War II, under Gen. Chesty Puller. He was active in veterans organizations, serving as National President of Dads of Foreign Service Veterans of USA from 1988-1989, Fourth District Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Commander of the Michael F. Pliseck VFW, Herkimer, and Commandant of the Marine Corps League, Ilion. Before he joined the Marines, Harold was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was also a member of the Camden American Legion. For years he was an avid bowler and softball player and worked a large garden, sharing the produce with friends and family.
He was service department manager at Montgomery Ward for many years, retiring from the maintenance department of the Herkimer Hospital.
Funeral Service will be on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. The Reverend Wrightson Tongue of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer-Little Falls will officiate. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friend Tuesday evening from 6:0 until 8:00 p.m. Mr. Hutton will be laid to rest with Military Honors in North Columbia Cemetery at a time to be announced. Members of the Michael S. Pliseck V.F.W. Post 4915 are asked to meet at the funeral home on Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. for services.
