HERKIMER - Harold E. Mumford age 87, of Sherwood Acres Drive, passed away peacefully on Wednesday April 8, 2009 in Valley Health Services Inc., Herkimer.
Harold was born on November 17, 1921 in Mohawk, the son of Raymond Blatchley and Mabel Casler Mumford. He attended public schools in Mohawk, Jordanville, and Van Hornesville, graduating as president of the Class of 1939 Van Hornesville Central School, renamed the Owen D. Young Central School.
In 1939 he enlisted in the Navy and served until Christmas 1945. During World War II he saw action in the American, North African, Atlantic and North Atlantic, Sicilian, Italian and the Pacific Theaters, losing his ship, the U.S.S George Elliot at Guadalcanal. Another of his ships, the U.S.S Barnett was also severely damaged at Gela, Sicily. He was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two stars, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two stars and the Good Conduct Medal with one star.
On February 18, 1944 he was united in marriage with Olive Jeanne King in the then Baptist Church in Jordanville.
He was employed by Mather-Evans and Diehl in Uticaand Remington Rand-Univac in Ilion before becoming a Business Manager of the Owen D. Young Central School in Van Hornesville. He retired in May of 1981 from that position and enjoyed the next several years at his home on Peck Lake, outside of Gloversville.
Harold Served as an Assistant Scout Master of Boy Scout Troop 36 in Jordanville from 1956 until 1963, and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. He was a council member of the Jordanville Federated Church of Christ and served as its treasurer for several years. He was also a member of the Jordanville Mens Club.
For many years Harold was active in the Herkimer Countyand the New York State Association of School Business Officials. He has been a member of the American Legion Post #25, Mohawk since 1949
He presently is a member of the Tri-County Old Time Power Association of Fort Hunter and the Coon Hollow Engine club of Fonda. He is also a member of the Sportsmans Club of the Starkville, Van Hornesville, and Jordanville area. He is also a member of the Herkimer County Historical Association.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 65 years Olive, include a son Keith Harold Mumford of Oppenheim, a daughter, Kay Eileen Collins and Son-in-law, David Collins of Jordanville, a granddaughter, Denise Kay Collins of Whitesboro, a grandson Gregory Daniel Mumford, his wife Sharon and three great- granddaughters, Samantha, Jazmin and Alexis Mumford all of Oppenheim, a sister-in-law Thelma King of MO, several nieces and nephews.
Harold was preceded in death by his brother, Orville and sister-in-law Eva Haggar Mumford, a sister, Gertrude Harrer and her husband David and a brother-in-law Lorne King. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday April 14, 2009 at 11:00 am, in the Jordanville Federated Church of Christ with the Reverend Kenneth Dingman officiating. In the lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Jordanville Federated Church of Christ or the Jordanville Public Library. Envelopes will be available at the church. There are no public hours.
The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff of 1-East for the kindness and gentle care shown to Harolds during his stay at Valley Health Services.
