EAST HERKIMER-Harold C. Richer 'Red' age 68 of East Zoller Avenue peacefully entered into eternal rest on Saturday Morning May 14, 2005 in Valley health Services Inc., Herkimer.
He was born on June 11, 1936 in Little Falls, son of the late Clyde J. and Iva Morris Richer. A lifelong area resident Red was raised and educated in Herkimer. On September 15, 1956 he was united in marriage with the former Barbara Hays in the Frankfort United Methodist Church. An honorably discharged US Army veteran he served from 1958 until 1962 spending three of those years in Okinawa, Japan. For approximately forty years he owned and operated Richers Auto Machine Shop on Dorf Street in Herkimer, retiring in January of this year.
He had a strong belief in God and was of the Methodist Faith. Red had a strong sense of community and was respected by business associates as well as the people he served. He was a member of Herkimer Elks Lodge #1439 where he served on the House Committee and was Secretary-Treasurer of the Mohawk Valley Town Bowling Association. In his leisure time his main interests were his love for NASCAR Racing, his dogs, just conversing with people and playing cards. He was a friend to many and will never be forgotten.
Surviving are his wife of forty-eight years Barbara, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Robert and Doris Hays of Sun City, CA, Edward and Esther Hays of Ilion, Beverly Smithers of Herkimer, Sharon Richer of Jordanville, Betty Richer of East Herkimer, Bertha Hays of Fallston, MD, several nieces, nephews and his dog Lucky.
Besides his parents three brothers, John, George and Clyde Richer, a brother-in-law, Donald Hays and sister-in-law, Doris Humphrey, preceded him in death.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 am in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. The Reverend Wrightson Tongue, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls will officiate. Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Town of Little Falls. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00 pm.
Members of Herkimer Elks Lodge #1439 are asked to meet at the funeral home at 7:00 pm for ritualistic services.
