Obituary

MOHAWK - Harrison John Hum Hummel Jr. age 80 of Canal Street passed away after an extended illness on Thursday December 31, 2009 in the Masonic Care Community, Utica. He had the comfort of his loving family at his side. He was born on August 25, 1929 in Herkimer, son of the late Harrison J. and Marguerite Miller Hummel. A lifelong area resident he was a graduate of Herkimer High School, class of 1947. He furthered his education at Hartwick Collegeand then returned to Herkimer when his father became ill to assist in his familys business which his father started in 1934 then known as Excello Office Supplies. Under his ownership the business was then named Hummels Office Supply and in later years Hummels Office Plus. Mr. Hummel retired from the business as Chairman of the Board in 1975 turning the business over to his son Harrison J. Chip Hummel III with stores in Herkimer, Utica,Rome and Syracuse. On July 18, 1953 he was united in marriage with the former Mary Elizabeth Betty Thuot in Saint Francis deSales Church, Herkimer. Harrison had a true sense of community. Politically he served for four years as a Herkimer Village Trustee and Mayor. He spent seven years as a Herkimer Town Supervisor and Herkimer County Legislator and was asked to be an Electoral Vote in New York Statefor Richard M. Nixon when he ran for president. Mr. Hummel was also Chairman of the Village and Town Republican Committee. He was a member of Herkimer Elks Lodge # 1439 where he was a Past Exalted Ruler, a member of Herkimer Lodge # 423 Free and Accepted Masons, a member of the Herkimer Kiwanis Club and a Charter member of the Herkimer Lions Club. For thirty years he was a Call Fireman for the Village of Herkimer and was a forty years member of the Excelsior Hook and Ladder Fire Company. Harrison will always be remembered as a man whose life was centered around his family and the business that his father created. In his leisure time he enjoyed playing golf, fishing, being a avid Yankee fan, the Captain of the Sanibel Fishing Pier and those Wednesday night dinners with his close friends, Henry Gaffey, Fred Spogen, Leo Rycharski and Don Adams. To all who knew him, he was an honest, down to earth gentleman who was never to busy to stop and talk to you and listen to what you had to say. He will be greatly missed. Surviving are his devoted wife of fifty six years Betty, one son, Harrison J. Chip Hummel III and his wife Judy of Mohawk, a daughter, Carol Aufmuth and her husband James of Little Falls, a sister, Janice Swift of DeBary, FL, six grandchildren who were the object of all the pride he possessed, Harrison J. Hummel IV of Utica, Keila Frederick and her husband Joshua of Holly Springs, GA, Justin Hummel and his wife Heather of Little Falls, Solace Hummel of Little Falls, Jordan Hummel of Mohawk, Kendall Aufmuth of Little Falls, five cherished great grandchildren, Logan, Coltan and Daltan Frederick, Jackson and Lily Hummel, several nieces, nephews and cousins along with his canine companion Kramer. Funeral from Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer will be on Monday at 10:30 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am in Saint Francis deSales Church, Herkimer with the Reverend Mark Cunningham, Pastor officiating. Interment will take place later this spring in Calvary Cemetery. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 4:00 until 7:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Saint Francis deSales Regional Parochial School, Saint Francis deSales Church or the Herkimer County Humane Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. His family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to the nurses and staff of the Manhattan Wing of the Masonic Care Community for all the care and compassion shown Harrisonduring his stay.
