Obituary

ILION - Harry J. Goodman age 81 of East North Street, passed away peacefully on Wednesday evening December 12, 2007 in the Masonic Care Community, Utica. He was born on July 30, 1926 in West Winfield, son of the late Harry F. and Florence Bemis Goodman. Harry was raised and educated in West WinfieldElementary School and was a graduate of Mohawk High School. Upon completion of high school he proudly answered the call of his country by enlisting in the US Navy on July 28, 1944 in Albany. He served during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. During that time he was the recipient of the American Theatre Medal, Victory Medal, and Asiatic-Pacific Medal with two stars. He also took part in the Occupation of Japan. He was Honorably Discharged June 10, 1946, attaining the rank Seaman First Class. On March 29, 1974 he was united in marriage with the former Rose Massaro, (Goebel), in Casselberry, FL. For fourteen years he held the position of German Flatts Town Clerk until 1970. In later years he worked in the maintenance department of the Mount Markham School System, retiring in 1985. Mr. Goodman will always be remembered as a man with a down to earth manner, who found his peace and joy in the outdoors. As a member of the Mohawk Fish and Game Club he was an avid fisherman. He took pride in and had a real sense of community. He was a member Mohawk Valley Lodge # 276 Free and Accepted Masons, a Mohawk Auxiliary Policeman, a member of the Herkimer Boy Scout Council and was a coach for the Mohawk Little League. He enjoyed most kinds of music and could play several different musical instruments. Harry was happiest when he was surrounded by his many friends and family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will greatly missed. Surviving are his loving wife of thirty three years Rose, one son Brad Goodman of Mohawk, a daughter, Stacy Hardin and her husband Steven of Salisbury, NC, four grandchildren Kristy Tracy and her husband Joseph, Kurt Nuneker and Tyler Nuneker all of NC, Brandon Goodman of Mohawk, two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Chloe Tracy, three step-daughters, Jane Getman of Sauquoit, Janet Gilbert and her husband Gerry of East Herkimer, Leona Goebel of Burlington, VT, nine step-grandchildren, Jimmy Ward, Kathleen Ward MD, Sarah Getman, Benjamin Getman Grant Goebel, Josiah, Isaiah, Elijah and Hannah Gilbert. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his step-son Robert Goebel. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer. The Reverend Anthony Barratt, Pastor of Annunciation Church, Ilion will officiate. Interment will take place in Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer next spring at a time to be announced. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday two hours prior to the funeral service (12:00 noon until 2:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Ilion Fire Department and Rescue Squad. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
