He was born Nov. 22, 1925, in Little Falls, the son of the late Karl G. and Elsie Knabe Schifferdecker. Harry was raised in Little Falls and was educated with Little Falls High School Class of 1944, until military service interrupted his education. On Jan. 27, 1944, he enlisted with the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the USS Kephart and received the American Theater Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and a Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on May 5, 1946, with the rank of signalman third class. Upon his return home he reentered Little Falls High School, where he graduated with the class of 1946. He first worked as a stationary engineer for the Cherry Burrell Co. in Little Falls, then for eight years at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome and for 20 years at Mid-State Correctional Facility, retiring in 1988. He was a life member of the Steve Stefula VFW Post 4612, Little Falls. Harry was a friend to many and will always be remembered for his generosity when he picked strawberries and personally delivered them to his friend and neighbors, year in and year out. Surviving are his sister, Ruth Gokey of Herkimer; two nieces, Cheryl Gokey of Herkimer and Barbara and her husband Steven Perkins of Bath, Maine and several cousins. Besides his parents, his twin brother, Ralph J. Schifferdecker preceded him in death on March 7, 2000. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer. The Rev. David Kirkpatrick, chaplain of Masonic Care Community, Utica, will officiate. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the East Herkimer Volunteer Fire Department or the Herkimer County Humane Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Members of Little Falls VFW Post 4612 are asked to meet at the funeral home on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for services.
