Obituary

RICHFIELD SPRINGS - Hazel M. Smith, 84, of Butternut Road, passed away after a long illness on Monday morning, Oct. 17, 2005, in Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown. She was born Nov. 5, 1920, in Georgetown, daughter of the late Lionel M. and Nina D. Kinney. Hazel was educated in both Georgetown and Van Hornesville schools. On July 23, 1937, she married Raymond G. Smith in Smyrna, a loving and devoted union of 63 years until his passing on March 3, 2000. Mrs. Smith was first employed by the Beechnut Co. in Canajoharie and for 28 years as lobby maid and florist for the Otesga Hotel in Cooperstown. She retired in 1999. She had a strong belief in God and was a member of the Van Hornesville United Methodist Church and, more recently, the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs. She was also a member of the Rebekahs and the Van Hornesville Home Bureau. Hazel loved the outdoors and nature; she delighted in gardening and took much pride in the beautiful flowers she would grow year after year. Her indoor leisure time was spent on embroidering and ceramics. But the highlight of her day would be watching the birds and the deer that would come to visit her yard every day and the memory of the day when a bear came into her yard to enjoy the food in the bird feeder. The years hold precious memories of a woman who will always be remembered as exceptional, unique and enduring, a woman who found true happiness being surrounded by her friends and family, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-granddaughter. She will be greatly missed. Surviving are her three daughters and their husbands, Rowena and Mort Robertson of Richfield Springs, Rosemary and Victor Paluzzi of Canajoharie, Virginia R. and Sam Lamanna Jr. of Mohawk; two sons, Raymond and his wife Patricia Smith of Richfield Springs, Norman Smith of Dexter, Maine; a brother, Melvin Kinney and his wife Shirley of Little Falls; 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides her parents and husband, Raymond, her grandson, Dean Robertson, preceded her in death in March of 2004. Funeral service will take place on Friday at 11 a.m. in the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, with the Rev. William Harkins, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Springfield Center Cemetery. The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 West James St., Richfield Springs, on Thursday from 6-9 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made with donations to the Catskill Area Hospice or the Church of Christ Uniting Memorial Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
