HERKIMER - Helen W. Anderson age 98 of 104 North Washington Street (Claxton Manor) passed away peacefully on Friday morning June 15, 2007 in Folts Homes, Herkimer.
She was born on March 6, 1909 in New York City, daughter of the late George and Maria Burghardt Varga. As a young girl Helen along with her family moved to Florida where she was educated in Tampa Public Schools. She at one time was married to Russell R. Emerson who passed away. On August 6, 1950 she married William Wimpy Meyer and raised his five daughters. Mr. Meyer was with the Miami Fire Department and worked as a fire investigator there. He died in 1972. On May 28, 1975 Helen was united in marriage with Robert Anderson, they made their home in Naples, FL where they were both active members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 7721. Mr. Anderson preceded her in death in 1987. In 2005 Mrs. Anderson moved to Herkimer to be nearer to her daughter Joy Emerson Vertucci of Richfield Springs.
For many years Mrs. Anderson worked for the Miami City Water Department where she retired in 1974 as Head Verifier of the department.
Helen was a person who loved to stay active. In both Miami and Naples she had many friends and was always there to volunteer wherever she was needed. She was proud of her life membership with the Miami Moose Lodge. Mrs. Anderson sat on the Golden Gate City Council; Naples during its developing years in the 1970s and remained on the council until 1996. In her leisure time she enjoyed her gardening, especially her exotic plants and over 200 orchids. She spent many hours making floral arrangements for her friends and family. Being musically inclined she found much joy in playing the organ and also found great relaxation as an avid reader.
The years hold precious, the memories of a loving, caring and hopeful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be truly missed.
Surviving are her daughter, Joy Emerson Vertucci and her husband Frederick of Richfield Springs, her husband William Meyers daughters, Patricia Meyer Brown and her husband Gerald of CA, Mary Meyer Byrd of GA, Pauline and her husband John Lipe of FL, Cynthia Meyer Kniphoff of West Newton, PA, two foster-sons, Marty Kamper and David Byrd, eighteen grandchildren, many great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and two special friends Peg Reynolds and Shirley Dreis both of Richfield Springs. Besides her parents and husbands, Russell, William and Robert she was preceded in death by her daughter Barbara Babs Galambos, two brothers, Ernest and Joseph Wargo, two sisters Rose Shumate and Rita Kamper.
A Memorial Service will be held on Monday at 7:00 pm in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home; 40 West James Street, Richfield Springs. The Reverend Anthony Ligato will officiate. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the memorial service (6:00 to 7:00 pm).
