Helen E. Wires, age 100, of Richmond, VA and formerly of St. Augustine and Herkimer, died on Saturday, September 19, 2015, at The Laurels of Willow Creek. She was born August 5, 1915 in Herkimer, and graduated from Herkimer High School in 1933. She married Edwin B. Wires in 1939, studied organ with George Davis in Utica, and served as organist and choir director of several Mohawk Valley, New York churches, before taking a position as organist and choir director of the First Methodist Church in Herkimer, a position she held for 16 years. In 1964 she and her husband, Edwin, moved to Raquette Lake, where they managed Kamp Kill Kare, a large private Adirondack Great Camp. Upon her husband's retirement in 1975 they moved to St. Augustine, FL. She and Eddie, as she called him, were members of Memorial Presbyterian Church where Helen sang in the choir for 20 years and taught music at Presbyterian Day School for 4 years. Helen was a member of the St. Augustine Garden Center, Amaryllis Circle; American Guild of Organists; and the St. Augustine Womens Club where she directed the chorus for 15 years. She was also a life-time member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was predeceased by her husband Edwin (1985) and survived by her children Roy Wires (Marilyn) of St. Augustine, Fl and Ginny Engler, Richmond, VA, four grandchildren - Andrew Wires, Fanya Engler, Dara Engler and David Engler, and several nieces and nephews. Helen will be remembered for her honest, sweet gentle disposition, and her ability as a loving wife and mother. In addition to her music and family, she also enjoyed playing Bridge, boating and family outings. Graveside memorial services will be Friday at 12:00 noon in Oak Hill Cemetery. Reverend Janet Gleason, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Herkimer/Little Falls will officiate. Funeral arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home, Inc. Herkimer.
