Obituary

Henry F. Abele Jr. age 90 of Herkimer passed away peacefully on Monday morning May 30, 2016 in Bassett Medical Center, Cooperstown. He had the support and comfort of his loving family by his side. Henry was born on July 26, 1925 in Albany, son of the late Henry F. Sr. and Clara Kunath Abele. He was raised in Albany and was a graduate of Albany Academy. A veteran of World War II, he served with the US Navy as a Third Class Aviation Machinists Mate. He was the recipient of the Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal and Combat Crew Insignia. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After his military service he worked with his father at the Henry F. Abele Construction Company in Albany. On October 22, 1949 he was united in marriage to the former Ruth Jackson in Saint Marys RC Church in Clinton. They moved to Herkimer in 1954. Mr. Abele had many talents, working as a self-employed carpenter. He was an exceptional finish carpenter, creative practical builder and amazing craftsman. In his later years he worked for Johnsons Carpet and flooring and Enjems Carpet and Flooring, retiring in 1988. Henry and Ruth had a longtime love for the Adirondack Mountains. He built a camp on Limekiln Lake, Inlet in 1962. Here he enjoyed lake life and created a lasting memory for all the family. He loved baseball and was a avid Yankee fan. To all who knew him he was a caring, helpful and humble man with an unforgettable smile. He loved his family and was always there for them. He will be sadly missed. Surviving are his devoted wife of sixty-six years, Ruth, one daughter, Janice Huminuik and her husband Michael of Banff, Alberta, Canada, two sons, Thomas E. Abele and his wife Brenda of Rochester, Edward W. Abele and Kathleen Lowery of Little Falls. Grandchildren, Matthew and wife Tiffany Abele of Oneida, Sara and husband Josh Gross of Little Falls, Michael Abele, Nicholas Abele both of Rochester, Kirby Huminuik of Canada. Great grandchildren, Sam and Nicole Abele, Lucas Abele and Connor Gross and Roshan Mukunda, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Calling hours for Mr. Abele will be on Thursday from 5:00 until 8:00 pm in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street; Herkimer. Funeral service will take place on Friday at 11:00 am in the funeral home. The Reverend Janet Gleason, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer/Little Falls will officiate. Interment with military honors provided by the US Navy will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made with memorial donations to the Valley Health Services, Inc.
