Obituary

HERKIMER-Herbert W. Engert age 79 of Jeffrey Street entered into eternal rest on Tuesday morning November 25, 2003 in the Masonic Home, Utica after a difficult and courageous battle with Alzheimers disease. He was born on July 15, 1924 in Herkimer son of the late Daniel W. and Edna Snyder Engert. A lifelong Herkimer resident, he was a graduate of Herkimer High School. He furthered his education at Ryder College where he received a Bachelors Degree in accounting. A veteran of World War Two he served with the US Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged in 1946 attaining the rank of Corporal. On September 1, 1951 he married the former Geraldine Oldfield in the First Baptist Church, Herkimer. A devoted union of thirty years she passed away on February 20, 1982. Mr. Engert owned and operated Engerts Lumber Company on Route 28 in Herkimer from 1955 until his retirement in 1996. On June 18, 1983 Herb was united in marriage with Mildred Skandera Rhen in the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Herkimer. For twenty years they have shared a caring and loving union. Mr. Engert had a strong belief in God and was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Herkimer. During his life he was involved in many civic and community organizations, for a number of years he was a member of the Herkimer School Board of Education, from 1976 until the mid 1990s he was on the Board of Directors of the Library Bureau, Herkimer, he was also a member of the Herkimer Lions Club and a former member of the Herkimer Elks Lodge #1439. In 1980 he along with his brother-in-law Bill Oldfield received the Distinguished Citizen Award from the Boy Scouts of America. Herb was a living example of an honest man who was dedicated to his family and community. Nothing can detract from the joy we shared in knowing him. Surviving are his wife Mildred Millie Engert, five sons, James and his wife Sheila Engert of Woodbury, MN, William Engert of Frankfort, Herbert Engert Jr. of Vienna, VA, David Rhen of San Antonio, TX, Steven and his wife Jacqueline Rhen of Edinboro, PA, four daughters, Linda Dillon of Middleville, Mary Ann Engert-Pietruszewski and her husband Larry of Becker, MN, Patricia and her husband Greg Schrier, of Duluth, GA, Nancy and her husband Leo Catarisano of Fairport, a son-in-law Mark Kaucher of Little Falls, two sister-in-laws, Constance Engert, Elizabeth and Donald Emrich all of East Herkimer, seventeen grandchildren, Meghan Kathryn and Kelly Dillon, Kevin and Alicia Kaucher, Alec and Aidan Engert, Danielle and Aviana Catarisano, Jillian, Jacob and Jordan Rhen, Hunter Wilson, Joshua, Douglas, Nicholas and Jessica Schrier, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents and first wife Geraldine a daughter, Kathleen Kaucher and a brother, George Engert preceded him in death. Funeral service with Holy Eucharist will be celebrated on Monday at 11:00 am in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Herkimer. The Reverend Alice Moberg-Sarver, Interim Pastor and the Reverend David Kirkpatrick, Chaplain of the Masonic Home, Utica will officiate. Following the funeral service Mr. Engert will be laid to rest with military honors in Oak Hill Cemetery. Private viewing hours for family members will be held on Saturday evening from 7:00 until 9:00 pm. The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 until 9:00 pm. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Alzheimers Association of Central New York or the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Herkimer. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The family appreciates the care and concern shown by the staff at the Masonic Care Community and all the people known and unknown for their gracious help with Herb during his Struggle with Alzheimers disease. Especially Frances Horner for sitting with Herb in church so Millie could sing in the choir.
